Lewisburg’s Foley wins two titles at District 4 AA swimming

BLOOMSBURG All the awards had been handed out and the majority of swimmers and spectators had already stepped outside into another cold winter night. Inside Bloomsburg’s natatorium, Lewisburg’s Caitlin Foley still had her goggles protecting her eyes and swim cap covering her hair. The sophomore was the last remaining swimmer in the water as she completed her cool down laps following another successful night at the District 4 Class AA girls swimming championships.

Foley, who won district championships in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke as a freshman, duplicated the feat on Friday night at Bloomsburg University.

“I was kind of nervous a little bit coming in since I did win last year,” Foley said. “I don’t know if I put more pressure on myself. I just wanted to really do well and swim well. I think I did a little bit better than I did last year so I accomplished the goal I wanted to.”

The sophomore won the 200 IM by over 2 seconds, finishing in 2 minutes, 14.22 seconds. The returning state placewinner in the backstroke won that event, too, with a personal-best time of 59.35. Millville’s Sydney Mercer pushed Foley to the line in that race, but the Lewisburg swimmer with a long stretch to the wall still won by nearly a second.

“She swam a good race,” Foley said. “I like to have someone right next to me to push me and to keep me going strong.”

Montoursville’s Marissa Gombosi took 10 seconds off her seed time and placed third in the 200 IM behind Foley and Central Columbia’s Katie Madden. Madden closed on Foley during the breaststroke portion of the event, but Foley extended her lead over the final 50 yards with an aggressive freestyle.

All the winners from Friday night advance to the PIAA Championships that will be held for Class AA competitors on March 13 and 14 at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium. Non-winners can still qualify for the state championships, but their times will be compared throughout the state and a full list of state qualifiers will be known next week. Sixteen individuals and eight relays in each event will be added to the state meet based on time. The District 4 AA boys will swim here tonight.

Montoursville’s Julia Arnold had a productive district meet, placing fifth in the 500 freestyle and sixth in the 200 free. The junior took 7 seconds off her seed time in the 500 free and set a new school record.

“That was wonderful because she was a touch slower than her seed time in the 200 free and so she had been discouraged from that,” Montoursville coach Russ Gombosi said, “but I knew she had it in her and she just reached deep and slammed it.”

Coach Gombosi appeared confident his daughter, Marissa, had a better than good chance of qualifying for the PIAA meet in the 100 backstroke where she finished behind Foley and Mercer. Gombosi, a returning state qualifier in the 100 backstroke, swam over 5 seconds faster than her seed time and touched the wall in 1:00.51, setting a new school record.

Gombosi also helped a pair of Montoursville relays to place in the Top 6. The 200 freestyle relay finished third and the opening 200 medley relay was fifth. The Warriors finished third in the team race for a second consecutive year with 195 points. Central Columbia won the district plaque with 491 points and Bloomsburg was a distant second with 219. Lewisburg was fourth (189), Wellsboro 10th (68), Jersey Shore 14th (32), Meadowbrook Christian 15th (30), North Penn 16th (22) and Warrior Run 18th (4).

Mifflinburg’s Adrianna Grabski, a defending PIAA champion in the 50 freestyle, coasted to a second consecutive district title in the event in 24 seconds flat. The junior also defended her 100 free title and won the 200. Lewisburg’s Emily Maxwell placed second to Grabski in the 100 and 200 freestyles, and she joined Foley in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays that settled for second place, too.
