Local roundup: Lycoming men pick up big win

Making his first collegiate start, freshman William Wingate finished with a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds, including three huge points in overtime that helped the Lycoming men’s basketball team to an 82-76 win over Arcadia in a battle of third-place teams in the Commonwealth Conference on Saturday.

“You have to fight tooth and nail to the end,” Lycoming head coach Guy Rancourt said. “I was proud of our guys. They fought hard to the very end.”

Wingate tied the game at 71 with 3:53 left in overtime with a free throw before senior Anthony Martin hit a jumper as he was fouled to give Lycoming (15-8 overall, 9-7 Commonwealth) the lead for good. After junior Michael Rudy grabbed the offensive rebound, Wingate hit a jumper to give Lycoming a four-point lead.

After an Arcadia (13-10, 8-8) free throw made it a three-point game, sophomore Patrick Dougher nailed a jumper to make it 77-72 with 58 seconds left. From there, the Warriors hit five of six free throws at the line to ice the win.

Dylan Talley had 16 points and Nebraska pulled away from Penn State early in the second half.

Nebraska (12-12, 3-8 Big Ten) opened the second half with an 12-2 spurt that put the Cornhuskers up 41-26 on David Rivers’ free throws with 16:50 left.

Penn State (8-15, 0-11 Big Ten) cut the Nebraska lead to 52-40 on D.J. Newbill’s layup with 6:50 left. Talley’s 3-pointer and a Brandon Ubel free throw put Nebraska back up 16 with 5:32 left.

In college wrestling, Millersville used a decision at heavyweight to escape Lycoming, 18-15.

The Warriors (7-8 overall) fell behind 15-3 after six bouts, but mounted a rally with three straight wins over the Marauders (3-9 overall).

Junior Johnathan Secor started the run with a dominating 4-0 decision against Tyler Hoover at 174 pounds to improve to 16-14 on the season.

In women’s basketball, Lycoming sophomore Kat Andriani used career-highs of 10 points and six blocks to give the Warriors a 67-49 win over Arcadia, helping the Warriors stay in a tie for the fifth-and-final Commonwealth Conference playoff spot.

The Warriors (7-15 overall, 7-9 Commonwealth) are within a win of clinching their first playoff berth since 2000.

Junior Julia Antonelli posted her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior Kierstin Steer scored 15 points leading Penn College in its 68-44 loss to Southern Virginia University. Freshman Jamie Steer notched 13 and sophomore Mackenzie Brown added 11.

Lock Haven dropped a tough road matchup with Edinboro, 69-61.

Kacie Hershey led the Lady Eagles with 13 points.

Victoria Lacey led Mansfield with 12 points, but division-leading Shippensburg was too much as the Lady Raiders came away with the 81-55 victory.

Lacey sunk a career-best four treys on her way to career-high 12 points.

Senior Kayla Espigh and sophomore Megan McSwain each scored 10 points in the loss.

Shelby Romine became the 20th Bucknell Bison to score 1,000 career points, but it was Army’s Anna Simmers that was the game changer as the Black Knights took a 44-35 win at Sojka Pavilion.

After finishing the game with 16 points, Romine improved her career total to 1,005. That ranks her 20th in program history and makes her the first Bison to register 1,000 since Lauren Schober during the 2008-09 season.

In men’s basketball, Penn College sophomore Scott Fenton scored 20 points to lead Penn College in its 77-75 loss to PSU New Kensington. Sophomore Jesse Newman added 19 points and sophomore Jason Greenfield notched a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Lock Haven fell in a tough PSAC West road matchup with Edinboro, 82-72.

Wali Hepburn led Lock Haven with 22 points. He added 10 rebounds and a career-high eight assists.

Joe Bell and Onyema Utti combined for 37 points to lead Mansfield past Shippensburg, 74-66.

Bell connected on 8 of 13 from the floor on his way to a game-high 19 points in the winning effort. Utti hit 6 of 8 from the field and was a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line to total 18 points.

In college track and field, Lock Haven hit another NCAA provisional mark in the distance medley relay with a season-best, 9:58.81 at the Grand VAlley State University Big Meet in Allendale, Mich.

Seth Robbins led off the DMR with a 3:05.5, 1,200-meter leg before handing the baton to Sean Harper, who sprinted to a sizzling 400-meter split of 47.8. Matt Guiod turned a very solid 800-meter leg, splitting 1:56.2 and Alex Monroe brought the Bald Eagles home with a sensational mile leg (4:09.3).

The Bald Eagles finished third overall in the DMR and their 9:48.81 is the sixth fasted time in Division II this season.

Monroe led the way in the mile as he took home the win with an NCAA provisional mark of 4:14.00. Robbins was fourth with a time of 4:17.70.

Monroe’s time is the second fastest time in the PSAC and all three Bald Eagles rank among the conference’s top-eight guys.

Brice Beals led the way for the Bald Eagles at the Bucknell Winter Classic. The freshman threw a season-best 52-03.25 to take eighth in the men’s weight throw.

On the women’s side, the Lady Eagles were tough in the field events at Bucknell.

Brittany Whitmer tied for first in the high jump with a mark of 5-5.00 and Fallon Heddings placed third in the triple jump (37-03.25).

In boys basketball, Canton romped Northeast Bradford 71-34. Eddie Larcom had a nice night for the Warriors, scoring 23 points, reaching 1,000 for his career.

Hughesville overcame an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to come back and beat Warrior Run, 48-46, in overtime. Tristan Jeffreys scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Spartans who qualified for the District 4 playoffs with the win.

St. John Neumann opened with a 14-point advantage in the first quarter and cruised to a 79-53 win over South Williamsport. Alize Johnson scored a game-high 25 points for the Knights, and Jordan Cole added 16 points, including five 3-pointers.

Southern Columbia edged Montoursville, 49-45, despite scoring only 11 points in the first half.

Ammar Sabanovic had 11 assists and 11 points as Muncy rolled past Millville 58-39.

Sullivan County won 51-49 in an overtime thriller against Bloomsburg. Connor Wylie led the Griffins with 20 points. Derek Wilkins added 15 points for Sullivan County.
