Lock Haven losing streak reaches 13

LOCK HAVEN – Lock Haven men’s basketball coach Mike Nestor was hoping that his team would snap its losing streak Saturday afternoon against California (Pa.), but it didn’t happen as the Vulcans defeated the Bald Eagles 79-65 in a PSAC-West contest.

“Once that happens we can’t make it up. We just aren’t good enough to make it up,” said Nestor about the opponents pulling away. “I told these guys that when we are down 15 they scratch, they claw and they fight, but we have to be able to do that from the opening tip and right now, we aren’t doing that. I have to figure a way to get them ready to go so maybe it is my fault.

Although the Bald Eagles never led in the game, they played the Vulcans tough, trailing Cal by two points nearly five minutes into the game.

Cal (10-13, 9-10 PSAC West) gradually stretched its lead over the next eight minutes to lead by 26-14.

LHU cut its deficit back to single digits with 4:38 left in the opening half, but that is when the Vulcans went on an 11-4 run to close out the first half and take a 40-24 lead.

“Nothing in particular happens when the teams go on those runs against us,” said Nestor. “I think a big thing today was we called a play, got a layup and they went down and immediately hit a three. That is a five-point swing. We turn it over, they hit another jumper and suddenly it becomes an 11-2 or 11-4 run. I don’t want to blame a missed layup on anybody because it is what it is. That happens and it makes it very hard for us to come back from those situations with the personnel we have.

The Bald Eagles had three players in double figures led by Wali Hepburn with 19 points. Kasheef Festus added 18 points, while Nate Walters came off the bench to tally 11.

Quentin Harding led Cal with 26 points.

The Bald Eagles, who have lost 13 conesecutive games, have three games remaining on their schedule beginning with a home contest against Clarion Wednesday night.
