Neumann heats up, beats Muncy

DANVILLE – With two minutes left in the third quarter Jordan Cole buried a 3-pointer, and sent the St. John Neumann faithful to its feet as he put three fingers up on each hand.

Besides being a treat for the fans, the basket helped Neumann grab the next eight points as it defeated Muncy, 67-54, at Danville. The win set Neumann up for its second consecutive District 4 Class A title game at 5 Saturday at Montoursville.

“Once Muncy’s defense started sagging in we got the ball to Jordan,” St. John Neumann coach Paul Petcavage said. “Once we get something like that going it pumps the team up. It was a big play.”

After the basket, which tied the game at 30 apiece, Alize Johnson, Ryan Reid, and Richard Allen scored to extend the run. And once the dust settled and the third quarter ended, Neumann (22-2) found itself ahead by eight points as it entered the final quarter.

“Once I hit it, we started to pick it up more,” Cole said. “Everybody played great and stepped up the intensity. I’m proud of the team.”

“When Jordan comes on it opens me up inside,” Johnson said. “When Jordan hit that three it was a clutch shot and we needed it.”

It certainly opened up the inside for Johnson, who finished with a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds.

Johnson was limited to just four points in the third quarter, but surged for 11 fourth quarter points to help bury Muncy (17-7). Cole was also big down the stretch as he canned all six of his attempts from the line.

Muncy was led by Dawson Fox’s 19 points and Ted Clark’s 17 points. The Indians also received a solid performance from Nick Ring, who finished with eight points, three blocks, and 10 rebounds.

The Neumann answer for Ring’s size was Reid with help from Johnson. Initially, the defense contained Ring, but got Johnson into foul trouble.

“I just wanted him to play smart after that,” Petcavage said. “I usually just point to my head. He knows then to just play smart.”

Johnson was a little timid in the third, but excelled after Cole fired the team up with his second three of the game.

“It was a big three,” Cole said. “I was excited.”
