Six from Jersey Shore advance at District 4-9 AAA wrestling

CLARION Jersey Shore has six wrestlers still in the running for an individual title, while Willamsport has three after the first day of action at the newly formed District 4-9 Class AAA Tournament at Clarion University’s Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium.

Jersey Shore’s Allen Saar (113), Colton Killion (126), Hayden Swartwood (132), Zach Herman (145), Curtis Welch (152) and Nate Lose (195) all won their quarterfinal round matchups Friday evening and will compete in this morning’s semifinals.

Saar, Killion and Swartwood won their bouts via pin, while Herman notched a technical fall. Both Welch and Lose won by decision.

The Millionaires’ Steffen Yaskoweak (138) and Billy Kennedy (220) also picked up quarterfinal wins to put them in the semis. Yaskoweak was a 7-0 winner over White, while Kennedy pinned Selinsgrove’s Shane Keller in 1:01.

Williamsport’s undefeated 106-pounder Roshaun Cooley, the weight’s top seed, had a bye in the quarterfinals.

Both schools have their entire squads nearly intact after the first day of wrestling as only a two-bout, first-round consolation session followed the quarterfinals.

Noah Ulmer (106), Cory Killion (120), Austin White (138), Spencer Lane (160), Utoa Agai-Naipo (170), Domonic Loffredo (182) and Jake Huling (220) look to battle back through the consolation rounds for Jersey Shore.

Heavyweight and second seeded Nate Caputo was scratched from the tournament.

Wrestling in the consolation bracket after dropping their quarterfinal bouts for Williamsport are Matt Sherman (126), Dustin Heiser (145), Zarin Hornberger (160), Shawn Watkins (170), Malik Short (182) and Darren Holloway (285).

Millionaire 152-pounder Jaiden Shannon was eliminated after he dropped his pigtail and fell in the first-round of consis.

Jersey Shore ended Friday’s action in fourth place in the nine-school team race with 25.5 points. The Bulldogs trail St. Marys (31) and DuBois (28) out of District 9 and Shikellamy (27). Williamsport is ninth with six points.

Semifinal and second-round consolations are slated to begin this morning at 11. Finals are at 5:30.
