Lewisburg’s Foley 4th at state swim meet

Lewisburg sophomore Caitlin Foley finished fourth in the 100 backstroke at the PIAA Class AA Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday night at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.

The District 4 champion, who also placed in the top eight at last year’s state championships in the 100 backstroke, finished in 57.94 seconds. She qualified for the evening final after placing sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 58.67.

Margaret Gruber of Mars won the event the in a blistering 54.15. Villa Maria Academy’s Sarah Hitchens and Emily Cornell were second and third, respectively.

Foley’s Lewisburg teammate – Emily Maxwell – finished tied for seventh in the 100 freestyle. Maxwell, a senior, swam an identical 52.78 to Bethlehem Catholic’s Sydnee Karam. Maxwell tied for sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 53.17.

Montoursville’s Marissa Gombosi placed 24th in the 100 backstroke preliminaries with a time of 1:00.92. Gombosi qualified for the championships for a second consecutive year.

Villa Maria Academy won its third consecutive team championship with a PIAA-record 237 points. It broke the previous record of 221 points set by Villa Maria last year. Central Columbia placed fourth with 118.5 points.

Lewisburg sophomore Adon Shapiro was 20th in the boys 500 freestyle preliminaries and finished in 4:55.73.

Salisbury won the boys Class AA team title with 151 points, eight better than Franklin.

Bucknell starting pitcher Andrew Andreychik allowed three unearned runs in five innings, but the Bison fell to Valparaiso, 6-2, in college baseball. Corey Furman went 4-for-4 with a double from the leadoff spot for the Bison.

Loyalsock graduate Stephen Stopper went 1-for-3 with a run scored, but Manfield gave up runs in the sixth and seventh innings in a 3-2 loss to Ohio Valley. The Mounties’ Joe Candelmo scattered seven hits in seven innings of work, and struck out 10.

South Williamsport graduate Maria Cioffi won in straight sets without surrendering a game as Bucknell swept Minnesota State, 9-0, in women’s tennis. Bucknell lost just a combined 12 games in six singles matches to win.

Bucknell fell to Florida A&M, 5-1, in men’s tennis in the finale of their spring break tournament. Ryan Marcil recorded the only win for the Bison, marking his third consecutive match victory.

Bucknell senior Corey Lear has withdrawn from next week’s NCAA Wrestling Championships due to injury. The three-time EIWA placewinner at 165 pounds earned his second consecutive berth to the NCAA Championship on Wednesday and was scheduled to face Northwestern’s Pierce Harger in his opening bout.
