Mixed results yet again for Penn College spring teams

In Penn State University Athletic Conference games over the past week, Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball and softball teams went a combined 3-1. But later in the week, stepping up against NCAA Division II and III foes, they were 0-5.

The Wildcats picked up right where they left off the previous week, racking up 12-2 and 6-2 victories over PSU Hazleton on Wednesday to extend their win streak to six games and go to 11-1 in the conference. In the first game, Josh Longsderff went 3 for 3, including a three-run double, and James Simasek had a two-run homer to back the seven-strikeout pitching of Brian Santangelo. In the second game, Simasek and Zachary Weil each had two-run singles and winning pitcher Luke Zamiskie allowed just three hits in a game shortened by rain.

Facing non-conference NCAA Division III foe King’s College on Thursday, Penn College fell, 9-4. Cody Buterbaugh and Travis Hendershot each drove in two runs for the Wildcats.

Stepping up against NCAA Division II Mansfield University on Sunday, Penn College dropped the first game, 13-1, and lost the second, 5-2. Weil had a double in the first game and went 1 for 2 with two RBIs in the second as the Wildcats dropped to 10-14 overall.

Also, during the week it was announced that Hendershot was named the PSUAC Co-Player of the Week for the period ending April 7. In the team’s 7-1 week, Hendershot was 17 of 31 at the plate (.548) with 15 runs batted in, 17 runs scored and two home runs. He shared the honor with PSU Brandywine’s Gabe Encarnacion.

On Wednesday at PSU Hazleton, Penn College won the opener, 6-5, in eight innings, but dropped the second, 5-0, in a rain-shortened contest. In the win, Katie Kratzer went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and two runs batted in. The Wildcats are 4-6 in conference games.

Thursday’s scheduled home doubleheader with Luzerne County Community College was postponed because of the weather.

At NCAA Division III Alfred, N.Y., University on Sunday, the Wildcats lost the first game, 9-0, and lost the second, 15-0, to drop to 6-18 overall. During the doubleheader, Penn College managed just four hits.
