Roundup: WHS, Loyalsock softball win big; Lesser sets Lyco hit record

Williamsport pounded out 17 hits and scored five runs in the seventh inning to pull away from Punxsutawney for a 10-1 win. Alexis Bower was 3 for 4 with a double and a triple, and also struck out 12 pitching. Megan Horne hit a pinch-hit, solo home run for the Millionaires.

Loyalsock freshman Kayla Gee sparked a 21-hit assault, going 5 for 5 with a home run, double and four RBIs as the Lancers routed Shikellamy, 19-0 in five innings. Loyalsock (4-1) has scored 38 runs in the last two days. Allison Czap, Ashleigh Bair and Amanda Daneker all had three hits and combined for 12 runs.

Amanda Kutanbauter threw a one-hit shutout and Crystal Good and Jordan Jones both doubled as Muncy blanked Sullivan County, 15-0 in five innings. Jones and Good combined to score eight runs and Kustanbauter struck out seven.

Taylor Parker finished just a single shy of hitting for the cycle and threw a 3-hitter as Warrior Run downed upset-minded Montgomery, 11-3. Lynn Vermilya also homered for the Defenders (5-0) who scored eight runs in their final two at-bats and who trailed 2-0 early. Rachel Hite homered for Montgomery.

In baseball, Troy Hembury hit a three-run home run to help lead Muncy to a 9-3 victory over CMVT.

Wellsboro won its long-awaited season opener, 10-0 over Coudersport. Brandon Owlett was 3-for-3 with 2 triples.

In boys tennis, Hayden Forquer and Nate McFadden were 2-0 as the No. 1 doubles team for St. John Neumann, but the Golden Knights fell in consecutive matches to Cowanesque Valley.

The Montoursville girls track and field team performed well at the Cumberland Valley Invitational, finishing fourth out of 24 teams, most who were Class AAA squads. Kaylee Caruso took second in the triple jump, third in the long jump and was part of the fifth-place 4×100 relay team.

Williamsport’s Wes Cuozzo took first place in the 300 hurdles and was a member of the first place 1,600 relay for the Millionaires during the Altoona Igloo. Ethan Walters (110 hurdles), Brandon Fedoriw (400), Herb Stelly (800) and Devin Miller (long jump) all took first place in individual events. Jaid Harsch’s first-place finish in the 100 hurdles led the Williamsport girls there.

In college softball, Taylor Lesser became the Lycoming all-time hits leader, but the Warriors fell at Arcadia in a pair of Commonwealth Conference games, 1-0 and 10-3. Lesser broke Jeanine Evans’ record of 116 hits from 1997-2000. Also, Amy Cline and Janelle Poorman tied the school runs scored and RBI marks, respectively.

Lock?Haven swept Clarion, 7-5 and 4-3, in PSAC Central action, thanks to a tremendous individual effort by Brianna Jennings, who picked up the win in both games.

Mansfield smacked four home runs, including Kate Pratt’s record-setting 24th career home run, as the Mountaineers swept Mercyhurst in a doubleheader.

Kathy Jacobs won a singles match to lead Lycoming women’s tennis team, but the Warriors fell to Alvernia, 8-1.
