Penn College falls in first USCAA Small College WS game
BUTLER?- Despite leading through the first four innings, Penn College lost 8-5 to No. 7 Lindenwood-Belleville Monday in the opening game of the United State Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series The Lynx pulled off a late-inning surge scoring the go-ahead runs in the fifth inning. The Wildcats fell to the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
Penn College (22-16) scored four first-run innings as James Simasek and Rantz Mahaffey had two-run singles.
Lindenwood cut the lead in half scoring two off of Longsderff off of two extra-base hits in the bottom.
Zachary Weil hit an RBI single in the second to make it 5-2 Penn College. The Wildcats looked to add to the lead in the third but Mahaffey was out at home on a Jeremy Rall single.
With the game at 5-3 in the fourth, a costly error by Penn College allowed the Lynx to put together a small rally and score a run to bring it to within one. They used the momentum going into the fifth scoring three runs off of Longsderff, ending his day and taking the 7-5 lead. Sophomore Matthew Demilio came in relief getting out the next two batters ending the threat.
Longsderff finished pitching 4 1/3, with two strikeouts, six earned runs and nine hits.
Lindenwood-Belleville (24-20) scored one more run in the sixth ending its tally for the game. The Wildcatsput the tying runs on base in both the sixth and seventh but did not score.
