Cutters beat Mahoning Valley
Dylan Cozens and Logan Pierce hit home runs and the Williamsport Crosscutters defeated Mahoning Valley on Thursday night, 11-6, at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio.
Cozens hit a two-run home run – his third of the season – during a three-run third inning that came after the Cutters scored three runs in the second.
Pierce added a solo shot in the fifth inning – his second homer of the season.
Williamsport scored in six of the nine innings and led 8-1 after five innings.
The Williamsport bullpen did allow five runs over the final two innings, but the Cutters held for the win in the first game of the three-game series.
Chris Nichols picked up the win in his 2013 Williamsport debut. He relieved Julio Reyes who allowed one run in four innings.
Nichols pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth before Mark Meadors allowed four runs in his 1 1/3 innings.
Andrew Pullin went 3 for 6 with two RBIs, including a first-inning triple that extended his hitting streak to six games, for the Cutters.
Every Williamsport starter scored a run and all but one recorded a hit.
Reyes struck out six in four innings and Williamsport’s four pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
