Roundup: West End 15s win state tourney opener at Logue Field
West End won its first game at the Ages 13-15 Babe Ruth baseball state tournament Thursday at Logue Field, 8-0 over Chichester in a game that started two hours late because of lightning.
Caleb Schmucker earned the win, allowing three hits and walking one, while striking out nine in a complete game.
Evan Steele was 3-for-3, including a home run in a four-run sixth inning. He also scored three times and had two RBIs. Alec Fantaskey scored twice and doubled.
Each team committed four errors.
The West End 14-year-old team dropped its opening pool play game in the Babe Ruth state tournament to Valley, 4-3, in eight innings on Thursday.
West End tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but had the winning run thrown out at the plate. Valley took a 4-2 lead in the eighth and West End closed to 4-3 in the bottom of inning before leaving two runners on base. West End will look to even its pool play record today against Springford.
In the Age 13 Babe Ruth state tournament, West End beat Mifflin County, 10-7. Cody Shimp scored four times in the win.

In the Age 16 Babe Ruth state tournament, West End fell 3-1 to Spring Twp. Ethan Moore, Alex Rothrock, and Ian Dinsmore doubled in the loss.
The Montoursville Junior Softball team led Northeast Bradford 3-0 after 1 1/2 innings on Thursday night in a Section 3 winner’s bracket game, but the contest was suspended due to continuous lightning that surrounded the field for well over an hour.
The game will resume tonight in the bottom of the second inning.
The winner of tonight’s game will await the survivor of Warrior Run and the loser of tonight’s game. Northeast Bradford defeated Warrior Run Wednesday night.
Montoursville took a 3-0 lead over Northeast Bradford on Thursday in the top of the first after McKenna Budman hit a bases-clearing triple deep to left field. Hailey Gyurina started the two-out rally with a single and a hit batter and a walk set the stage for Budman.
