West End hosting state Babe Ruth tourney this week

West End is hosting the Ages 13-15 Babe Ruth baseball state tournament beginning today and running through July 25.

The teams include Broomall-Newtown from District 1, Chichester from District 2, Bensalem from District 3, Franklin Twp. from District 4, Mifflin County from District 7, West End and Keystone each from District 8.

The first game begins tonight when District 8 winner Keystone plays District 2 winner Chichester at 5 pm followed by District 1 winner Broomall-Newtown vs. District 3 winner Bensalem at 8 pm, each game played at Logue Field. Logue Field will be the site of all tournament games from July 17 through July 23.

The host team, West End opens Thursday vs. Chichester at 7.

West End is the oldest 13-15 year old organized team in the world as it enters its 70th year.

West End Manager Tom Marnon has high expectations for the state tournament.

“I’m expecting good baseball,” said Marnon. “Many of these kids on the 15 year old teams have played JV baseball and are now better.”

Even with the improved talent from each team Marnon is still expecting his kids to give it their all.

“I expect them to play hard every game and every pitch,” said Marnon. “This team has had success and they should be competitive.”

If West End is going to win, Marnon believes that pitching will be the major catalyst and his deep rotation can be an advantage.

“Pitching always (carries a team) in a game like this,” said Marnon. “We have 10 players on the team that can pitch well and I wouldn’t hesitate to use any of them.”

West End President Jim Winder, who has been president since 1985, has big expectations for the team.

“Win and head to Atlantic City,” said Winder.

Atlantic City is where the winner of the state tournament advances to play in the Middle Atlantic Regional Tournament on August 1.

“This team is very good and we have big expectations, this is the ninth year in a row in a state or regional game, no one else has done that,” said Winder.

West End will have many tests if it want to get to Atlantic City. After Thursday’s game vs. Chichester, West End will play Bensalem Friday night at 7. Bensalem defeated West End in the 14 year old State Championship last year and West End hopes to get revenge this year.

On Saturday West End will play Keystone at 4 pm, who they defeated twice this year. Then on Sunday, West End will play Broomall-Newtown at 7 pm.

If West End finishes with a top 4 seed it will play on July 22 at either 5 or 8. The final is set for Tuesday, July 23.
