Local roundup: Montour girls advance
Montoursville’s Carly Mill scored off a Lexi Marchioni assist in the 74th minute and the Warriors defeated Danville, 1-0, in the District 4 Class AA girls soccer quarterfinals at Loyalsock on Wednesday.
Marissa Folk stopped three shots for the Warriors (16-2-1), who will play Shikellamy in the district semifinals.
The South Williamsport girls soccer team edged Bloomsburg, 2-1 in dramatic fashion in the opening round of the District 4 Class A playoffs at Loyalsock. The Mounties (13-4-2) won the shootout, 3-2 as Laura Rook drilled in the game-winner on South’s final shot.
South trailed in the shootout, 2-1 but goalie Kelsey Gantz made two huge saves to keep South’s season alive while Miranda Young and Laura Rook made the game-tying and game-winning goals. Maddy Plummer put South ahead 1-0 in regulation while Mackenize Finn scored South’s first shootout goal. The Mounties will play Meadowbrook Christian, which beat Line Mountain in the first round, in Saturday’s quarterfinals at a time and place to be determined.
In women’s tennis, Penn College freshman Brooke Reed won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles but the Wildcats lost 3-2 to Penn State Mont Alto. Penn College finished the season 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the PSUAC.
In women’s soccer, Lycoming fell to No. 9 Messiah, 9-0.
Madison Taylor opened the scoring for Lock Haven but the Lady Eagles conceded the final two goals in a 2-1 loss at Roberts Wesleyan College.
In college field hockey, Blair Pembleton recorded a hat trick to lead Mercyhurst past visiting Mansfield, 4-0.
In men’s soccer, for the second straight week, Penn College senior Christopher Brennan has been named the PSUAC and United States Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week. In the team’s only game of the week, Brennan scored five goals, breaking Penn College’s single-game scoring record.
