Local roundup: Muncy boys clinch playoff spot
Muncy clinched a District 4 playoff berth with a 2-1 win over St. John Neumann on Wednesday. Dan Hall scored the go-ahead goal for Muncy (8-8-1) while Geoff Kist scored Neumann’s lone goal.
Marcus Bartlett scored three minutes into overtime as Montgomery defeated Sullivan County, 3-2. Jacob Umstead scored the game-tying goal with three minutes remaining for Montgomery.
Clayton Newton and Evan Jenkins each scored for Jersey Shore as it ended Hughesville’s season with a 2-0 loss. Matt Miller saved 10 shots to preserve the shutout.
Michael Hunter and Ian Warunek each scored as Central Columbia downed Loyalsock 2-0.
Warrior Run’s Elias George scored twice and the Defenders beat Montoursville, 2-0.
In men’s soccer, a goal in each half helped lift Lycoming to a 2-0 Commonwealth Conference win over Albright.
The shutout marked the Warriors’ second shutout of a conference opponent this season, marking the first time since 2008 the team had achieved the feat.
Shippensburg’s Jeff Ballard scored the game’s only goal of the match and the Red Raiders edged Lock Haven.
In women’s soccer, after a spectacular effort over the first 77 minutes, a worn-down Mansfield squad gave up four goals over the final 13 minutes of the game in dropping a 5-0 decision at nationally-ranked California.
California, currently in first place in the PSAC and ranked No. 9 nationally in NCAA Division II, scored the game’s first goal when Haley Henderson scored from inside the box off assists from Erin Hogan and Danielle Kearns in the 28th minute.
Using strong play from its defense, the Mountaineers kept the Vulcans off the scoreboard for the remainder of the first half half.
Mansfield had its best scoring chance early in the second half when Jessica Kerwin’s shot was stopped by Meghan Jayes in the 58th minute.
Mansfield finally tired and California (10-2-1, 10-1-0) took full advantage scoring four goals over the game’s final 13 minutes.
Alana Krieger was credited with four saves for the Mountaineers.
Mansfield falls to 4-8-1 overall and 3-8-1 in PSAC play.
Lock Haven lost 3-2 at Shippensburg in double overtime. Jamie Hunter and Madison Taylor scored for the Lady Eagles (4-8-1, 3-8-1 PSAC).
In college volleyball, with three of the four sets coming down to a margin of three or fewer points against a team undefeated in Commonwealth Conference play, Lycoming showed a lot of poise, but Lebanon Valley posted a narrow 3-1 (27-25, 22-25, 14-25, 25-23) win.
Even with the loss, the Warriors (19-9 overall, 4-4 Commonwealth) clinched a berth in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament for the third straight year, as a 3-2 win by Alvernia over Arcadia gave Arcadia a sixth conference loss and gives Lycoming the tiebreaker over both teams with five conference losses (Widener and Albright, who both fell to the Warriors). The Warriors will serve as the No. 5 seed for the second straight year, as they lost to both remaining teams with five wins (Messiah and Elizabethtown), and will open the tournament on the road on Monday, Nov. 4.
