Roundup: South’s Molino wins Shik Classic

South Williamsport’s Griffin Molino won the boys division of the Shikellamy Classic in cross country Saturday, running a 15:44, which was 46 seconds faster than second place and the second-fastest time ever on the course behind former PIAA runner-up Chris Spooner of Lewisburg.

In girls tennis, Hughesville’s Olivia Gorg and Allison Mattucci made some noise in the District 4 Class AA doubles tournament, as they knocked off South Williamsport’s eighth-seeded Hanna Summerson and Megan Rovenolt in the first round.

Gorg and Mattucci won their second round match as well, topping Loyalsock’s Mallee Hornberger and Emily Kuntz, 6-3, 6-1. The tournament was delayed due to rain midway through the second round, but will resume on Monday at the West Branch Tennis Club. The semis and finals will now be Wednesday.

In girls soccer, Mackenzie Bowman, Tayla Guinter and Erica Ludwikowski scored goals while Madison Fink saved four shots as Williamsport blanked Central Mountain, 3-0 in its regular-season finale. The Millionaires (6-10-2) also built momentum for the upcoming District 2-4 Class AAA playoffs.

Montoursville finished the regular season with a 3-0 victory at expected high playoff seed Athens, 3-0. Lexi Marchioni had a goal and assist as the Warriors scored all 3 goals in a 6-minute span.

In boys soccer, Sage Shaffer made seven saves in goal but Millville scored twice in the second half and downed playoff-bound South Williamsport, 2-0.

In men’s soccer, a goal by Alvernia in the 89th minute helped lead past Lycoming, 1-0.

Despite a pair of late goals for the Bald Eagles, Lock?Haven fell to visiting Millersville 4-2.

In women’s soccer, despite taking seven shots and forcing the Alvernia keeper to make three saves, the Lycoming fell, 3-0, to Alvernia.

Mansfield held No. 24 Slippery Rock scoreless for the first 60 minutes of the game before The Rock recorded four late goals against an injury-depleted Mansfield squad to earn a 4-0 win.

Lock?Haven lost 2-1 to Millersville.

In field hockey, Lacey Croasdale recorded a pair of goals while Kayla Grunza had a goal and two assists as Mansfield used its offense to power past Kutztown, 5-3.

In women’s swimming, Amani Khabeer won the 100 backstroke in 1:06.78 to highlight a solid effort by a young Mansfield team in a 114-85 setback to Kutztown.

Lock Haven opened the season with a 160-102 loss in dual-meet action at East Stroudsburg. Transfer Danielle Parowski (Univ. of Pitt) made her Lady Eagle debut a special one and picked up a pair of wins.

In cross country, No. 13 Lock Haven men’s team took second out of 26 teams at the Gettysburg Invitational.The Bald Eagles were led by Alex Diltz, who was seventh overall, with a time of 26:26.4. The women were seventh as well, led by Jessica McDonald’s 10th-place time of 23:16.3.

In sprint football, Franklin Pierce scored on a 37-yard pass in overtime to edge Mansfield 27-24.

Mansfield trailed 21-14 before scoring in the final minute of regulation on a 4-yard pass from Mike Maniscalco to Joe Busek to tie the game at 21-21. The Mountaineers then took a 24-21 lead when Kirk Haskill kicked 20-yard field goal after Mansfield got the ball first in overtime.

On its overtime possession, Franklin Pierce was called for a 15-yard penalty on a 2nd and 7 and faced a 2nd and 22 from the Mansfield 37 yard line when quarterback Ryan O’Kelly found on open Mike Holdridge who went 37-yard for the winning score.
