Roundup: Williamsport’s Manchester District 2-4 AAA girls tennis champ
Maggie Manchester won the District 2-4 Class AAA girls tennis title Friday in Wilkes-Barre, 7-6(8), 3-6, 6-4 in a 3-hour, 10-minute match.
Manchester was the No. 2 seed, beating top seed Tyra Abdalla of Abington Heights in the final. Manchester also won a three-set semifinal, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 over No. 3 Kristi Bowman of Crestwood.
“Tyra is a great player, and the first set was really long and tiring, but it made me realize I could win,” said Manchester. “The second set, I kept my focus but ran out of steam. I just wanted to get it over with so I could start out fresh. In the third set, I wanted to win and that’s what pushed me and gave me momentum. It was a tough set, but after 3-plus hours, I won. I couldn’t believe it.”
Abdalla advanced through the semis with a 6-0, 6-4 win over unseeded Isabel Bauer of Williamsport.
Manchester will compete in the PIAA championships Nov. 1-2 in Hershey.
“District 2/4 play is always intimidating because we see very little of the teams during our season. The area has some great players,” said Manchester. “Coach John Dorner and my family and friends have been really supportive, and the endurance was a blessing from God. My teammate Isabel Bauer did very well in the tournament and that was inspiring to me. We agreed to work hard and kept on pushing each other. She worked her way to the semi finals so we made the trip together today and that was great fun.”
Elsewhere in girls tennis, Liberty beat Galeton 4-3 as Katey McCloskey and Lauren Briggs won No. 2 doubles in 3 sets.
Wellsboro beat Williamson 4-2 as Maddy Clemens and Shyann Foreman won in 3 sets at Nos. 2 and 3 singles.
In boys soccer, Alex Stabler scored for Muncy in a 1-1- tie with Meadowbrook Christian.
In women’s volleyball, Lock Haven opened PSAC East play with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-17) win at Kutztown. Lock Haven (10-7, 1-4 PSAC) got a team-high 12 kills from Kaleigh Hudak and the Lady Eagles hit .500 in game three to earn the road-win over Kutztown (8-8, 2-3 PSAC)
