Porter tops Gray for Central Mountain
LOCK HAVEN – Big things should be expected when two wrestlers ranked in the state compete against one another.
But what transpired at Lock Haven University’s Thomas Field House as Central Mountain’s Cam-eron Porter, ranked 17th in the state, and Philipsburg-Osceola’s Nick Gray, who is ranked 24th in the state, got together for their 220-pound bout was something special.
The match highlighted a great day for the Wildcats, who defeated the Mounties, 38-18, in front of a mix of parents and wrestling fans at Lock?Haven prior to the LHU-Bloomsburg college match.
“Those first couple weight classes we were favored, so it was important to get the bonus points,” Central Mountain coach Doug Buckwalter said.
Chad Reese opened the dual meet at 160 for Central Mountain.
The Wildcat senior, who is ranked eighth in the state, earned a technical fall over Jacob Anderson with a 25-10 win.
Moments after Reese secured his eighth win of the season, Gavin Caprio, who is ranked 15th in the state, pinned Kaleb Guy with just 7.3 seconds left in the first period.
After the quick start, Loc Long finished a 10-0 win over Mason Pryde at 195 to give Central Mountain its third win of the match. The 220 bout followed, which gave fans one of the most entertaining matches of the night.
The bout was locked at 0-0 after one period. Cameron Porter then gained a 2-0 edge at the conclusion of the second period.
“Those two have seen each other multiple times over the past few years and know each other quite well,” Buckwalter said of Cameron Porter and Gray. “It was intense the entire way through.”
Knotted at two points apiece after three periods and two overtimes, Porter fought Gray for a point in the final seconds of the third overtime period.
