Bald Eagle women close season with victory

LOCK HAVEN — Picking up the pace in the final 20 minutes, the Lock Haven University women’s basketball team pulled away from Cheyney, 73-61 in the season finale for LHU on senior night at Thomas Field House.

Although they suffered through a lot of disappointing losses during the season, going out a winner in the season finale was big for the seniors as well as the underclassmen.

“You always want to end the season on a high note,” said LHU (7-19, 5-11 PSAC?East)?head coach Jennifer Smith. “It was especially nice because they have been playing good basketball for the past two or three weeks. Not only was it ending on a high note tonight, but it was the result of putting together a lot of hard work.”

Prior to the game, the Lady Eagles honored three seniors for their contributions to the program for the past three years. Receiving nice boquets along with a lot of hugs were Alex Brehony, Kelsey Ryan and Shaleta Heyward.

“Kelsey (Ryan) has been here for the past four years and she has done a lot for the program,” said Smith. “She has worked hard and had to play through an ACL so that shows the type of determination she had. She also had some knee injuries this year and she is a tough kid who has always done the extra for us.

“Alex was playing volleyball when we persuaded her to come over and join us because we needed some big bodies,” continued Smith. I think she enjoyed being a part of the basketball program and combining two sports. As for Chaleta, she was a fun addition this year. She brought a little spark into the program and it was really nice to see enjoy her last year.”

The Lady Eagles took the initial lead on a nice pass from Emily Daugherty to Marrysa Moyer and the Lady Eagles still held the upper hand at 16-11 six minutes into the game.

However, during the next two minutes, Cheyney (4-21, 4-12) outscored LHU 7-0 for an 18-16 lead with 12 minutes left and the Lady Wolves extended their margin to 25-18 midway through the opening period.

During the final 10 minutes of the half, LHU hung around by cutting three points off their deficit for a 37-34 Cheyney lead at the break.

The Lady Eagles came out of the locker room for the second half and put together a 13-5 run to take a 5-point lead at 47-42 with a dozen minutes left before extending their lead to double digits (54-43) at the midway point of the period.

“We just focused on keeping it simple and having them keep their body between the other girl and the basket,” said Smith. “If you are guarding a scorer you have to concentrate on stopping her, and if she isn’t (a scorer) you have to come over and help somebody else out.

During the final ten minutes, LHU was able to gain some separation between itself and the Wolves as they pulled away to a 73-61 win.

“I think the difference in the second half was maintaining focus and showing a little more energy,” said Smith. “I told them to separate themselves by going up four, then six and if they can do that it makes it difficult for the other team to stay in the game. I think they did a pretty good job of that.”
