Warrior Run drops HAC girls title to Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel has captured three straight District 4 Class AA championships and five straight HAC-II titles. Yet, the Tornadoes remain hungry.

Mount Carmel again shined when the pressure was highest Monday at Montoursville, owning the fourth quarter and defeating Warrior Run, 40-35 to capture the Heartland Conference championship.

“They wanted to prove a point,” Mount Camel coach Lisa Varano said. “They know there are some doubters out there and they wanted to prove them wrong.”

Mount Carmel outscored Warrior Run 13-8 in the fourth quarter, forcing eight turnovers. The Tornadoes changed things with their defense and beat Warrior Run (19-5) for a third time this season. Ali Varano scored 10 points, grabbed five rebounds and made four steals but different players made big plays at key times.

The names have changed the last few seasons at Mount Carmel. The results have not.

“I can’t pinpoint one player. They all came up huge,” Lisa Varano said. “The defensive effort was tremendous.”

Warrior Run forward Steph Shamburg had another big game, scoring a game-high 15 points, grabbing six rebounds and making three steals. She helped Warrior Run erase an eight-point second-quarter deficit and was the catalyst during an entertaining quarter in which the lead changed hands eight times.

“Steph steps up when we need here, but we couldn’t utilize her the way we wanted because our guards couldn’t get her the ball,” Warrior run coach Jon Weaver said. “It cost us.”

Abby Fisher had eight points and five rebounds for Warrior Run while Madi Welliver added eight points, seven rebounds and five steals. The game was tied 27-27 after three quarters.
