Hoffman earns fourth PJW state title

Montoursville’s Gavin Hoffman won his fourth Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling state championship Sunday, capturing the Junior High 157-pound championship. Hoffman broke the Area X record for PJW state titles which was previously held by Montoursville’s Luke Frey.

Hoffman was one of three local wrestlers to place in the tournament. Lewisburg’s Andrew Shedleski placed second at 167 pounds, and North Penn’s Justin Kriner was fourth at 252 pounds.

Hoffman defeated Ringgold’s Grant Gerard in the state final, 4-3. It was his fourth championship in five years to go along with state titles in 2010, 2011 and 2013. Frey, who currently wrestles at Penn State, won titles in 2004, 2005 and 2007.

Shedleski fell to Big Spring’s Blake Barrick in the 167-pound final, 5-1. Kriner won five consecutive consolation matches to reach the consolation finals, where he lost by fall to take fourth.
