Faster pace

LOCK HAVEN – Griffin Molino said he and his coaches had a plan for the 1,600-meter run at the Bald Eagle Invitational at Lock Haven University on Friday and it involved more than just plainly running fast. Molino had specific split times he wanted to hit in order to break 4 minutes, 20 seconds in the mile run, but each time he reached a split, he was ahead of his projected pace.

Still, when he crossed the finish line before stepping onto the FieldTurf at Hubert Jack Stadium and collapsing as if he was prepared to make a snow angel, the time he heared his coaches shout left the him wanting to jump for joy – if only his legs cooperated.

The time of 4:12.93 surpassed Molino’s expectations and shattered an 11-year meet record.

“It was kind of like a crazy get after it, but it was also about hitting my splits,” Molino said. “We had a plan, but I just went out there and got after it.”

North Penn’s Chris Cummings held the previous record of 4:24.03, which he set in 2003.

Molino’s time was 12 seconds better than his winning time at Mansfield’s Molly Dry Memorial Invitational just six days earlier and would have been good enough to win a PIAA Class AA championship a season ago as the winning time was 4:22.69.

“It was kind of disbelief,” said Molino about his winning time that was more than 18 seconds faster than the state qualifying standard of 4:31.13. “I thought maybe I was in 4:16 shape, but when I crossed and I heard 4:12 I was like, yes, let’s go. I didn’t actually say that because I was dying on the ground but in my head I was saying, let’s go. It was cool.”

Molino took off as if he was shot from a cannon, but anybody waiting for the junior’s pace to slow over the four-lap race was disappointed. He kept continuously turning his legs over at a rate of a 400 runner and as he came sprinting to the finish the line, the crowd began to realize they were watching something special and began to urge the South runner on.

Coach Ted Deljanovan was waiting at the finish, and even he couldn’t believe what his watch told him. As Molino laid on the ground attempting to replenish his lungs, Deljanovan bent over and gave his runner a few friendly pokes to his side.

“The last lap was all about guts,” said Molino, who was 4 seconds quicker than he had planned on his second and third splits.

Molino later came back and also won the 3,200 in 9:36.84.

The girls 1,600-meter run had plenty of intrigue for a different reason, as Lewisburg’s Blake Baylor and Warrior Run’s Tori Ross put on a classic battle down the stretch with a finish one would expect to see in the 100-meter dash. Baylor overtook Ross on her outside shoulder and looked relaxed to the finish, despite the Warrior Run freshman staying nearly shoulder-to-shoulder all the way to the finish.

Baylor finished in 5:20.54, while Ross ran a season-best 5:20.59. Warrior Run’s Sarah Grow finished third, South Williamsport’s Kyla Tsai-McKinley fifth and Lewisburg’s Olivia Martin seventh.

South Williamsport’s Katie Jones continued her fine first season by winning the pole vault, reaching 10 feet. Later in the day, Warrior Run’s Jared McHenry made school history for the second time this season in the boys pole vault. After setting the school record at 14-3, the senior bettered that height yesterday, reaching 14-6, a step closer to his goal of 15 feet.

“My run was really on today and I was swinging better than I usually do,” McHenry said. “Everything just seemed to click today more than usual.”

McHenry nearly didn’t clear a single height yesterday after choosing to enter at 12-6. The senior needed his third attempt to stay in the competition before everything began to click.

He attempted to break the stadium record by moving the bar up to 15-1, but he missed all three attempts. He’ll get a second crack at that record next Saturday at the Lock Haven High School Classic.

“That was insane. That was huge,” said McHenry about looking down the runway before attempting the stadium record. “I’ve never seen a 15-foot bar shile competing.”

North Penn teammates Alysa Davey-Bostic and Shannon Madigan placed 1-2 in the girls long jump. Davey-Bostic reached 15 feet, 11 inches while Madigan earned second place by an inch after hitting 15-5. Davey-Bostic also won the triple jump, reaching 34-8 . She was the lone jumper to hit 34 feet.

Warrior Run’s Noah Rosancrans had a strong day in the throws, winning the discus and placing second behind Canton’s Will Unruh in the shot put.

Local throwers swept the javelin with Milton’s Josh Brown winning the boys event with a toss of 186-10 and Warrior Run’s Steph Shamburg winning the girls with a throw of 122-10.

The Milton boys had a strong day on the track sweeping the three relays. Wade Heidel and Chris Reuss were on two winning relay teams and won an individual event. Reuss added a 200-meter title to his relay victories in the 400 and 1,600, and Heidel won the open 400 and was a member of the 3,200 and 1,600 relays. Tyler Porter was also a member of two of the relays, the 400 and 1,600.

All of that allowed the Black Panthers to easily win the team title over neighboring Warrior Run, 131-75. South Williamsport finished fourth with 62 points and Canton placed seventh.

Lewisburg narrowly missed claiming the girls title, falling just 1 points short of first-place DuBois. DuBois finished with 88 points. North Penn was fifth and Warrior Run sixth. Milton also cracked the Top 10 in ninth.

Baylor’s win the 800 was just part of the Green Dragons’ dominance in the mid-distance to distance events. Lewisburg won the 3,200 and 1,600 relays and the open 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

“We are very strong in our distance and our coaching helps us stay strong and healthy,” said Jenna Farmer, who set a season-best in the 800 with a winning time of 2:19.12. Like Baylor in the 1,600, Farmer beat Warrior Run’s Ross to the finish, though it was less dramatic as Farmer won by 9 seconds.

Jordan Hartzell, a freshman, won the 3,200 over teammate Allison Graham. Hartzell finished in 11:50.45. Another Green Dragon – Kara Devine – was seventh.

Farmer rallied Lewisburg in the 1,600 relay. The Green Dragons’ quartet trailed Waverly for the majority of the race, but coming around the final turn Farmer, who said she didn’t have a set plan as to when to make her move for the lead, passed the anchor of Waverly and held on at the finish, winning in 4:09.94. Waverly crossed in 4:10.49.

“I honestly had no idea (when I was going to try and pass her),” Farmer said. “My focus was to make sure I was mentally in the race the whole time and try to close the gap. Around the last turn I just gave it everything I had.”

Farmer also helped the 3,200-meter relay team win in 10:05.68. District 4 teams also placed fourth (South Williamsport), fifth (Mifflinburg), sixth (North Penn), seventh (Milton) and eighth (Warrior Run).
