Local roundup: Muncy drops slugfest

Maurice Brown hit a grand slam as part of an 8-run Muncy third inning, but Central Columbia used 4 home runs in rallying to a 9-8 victory Monday in high school baseball.

Southern Columbia stayed unbeaten with a 10-7 win over Lewisburg, surviving a 6-run third inning.

South Williamsport scored four seventh-inning runs to edge Montgomery, 5-1.

Hughesville improved its record to 6-1, after a 9-4 victory over Mifflinburg.

Jersey Shore’s Mike Schoonmaker went six innings and threw six strikeouts in his first career start, helpings lead the Bulldogs past Warrior Run, 8-6.

In softball, Allie Pagana went 3-3 with a home run, and Loyalsock posted 13 hits, as the Lancers trampled Hughesville 11-1 in four innings.

Muncy scored 19 runs in the first inning of a 30-0 victory at Sullivan County.

St. John Neumann fell to 1-5 on the year after losing to undefeated Bloomsburg, 10-4.

Towanda’s Sam Peachy hit a double and drove in two runs, helping the Black Knights past Wellsboro, 4-1.

Milton smacked 11 hits, as it won a high-scoring battle over Shamokin, 11-9.

Lizz Cummings knocked two home runs, but South Williamsport couldn’t find a way past Southern Columbia in a 9-4 loss.

Jersey Shore beat Midd-West, 10-0.

Lauren Russell sparked a sixth-inning, two-out rally with an RBI single and Jordan Kaler followed with a two-RBI double to give unbeaten Central Mountain a 4-1 win over DuBois.

In boys tennis, Galeton won each match in straight sets of a 7-0 win over Liberty, as it ran its record to 6-0.

Mark Odorizzi beat Josh Lloyd, 10-5 in the third set at No. 1 singles as Loyalsock beat Muncy, 5-0.

Hughesville lost both its No. 1 and No. 2 singles matchup to South Williamsport, but the Spartans rallied for a 3-2 win, improving to 10-1 on the season.

Lewisburg’s Tyler Spinello defeated Montoursville’s Scott Durrwachter 6-3, 6-1, helping the Green Dragons to a, 4-1, victory over the Warriors.

St. John Neumann dropped two matches to Central Columbia, 4-1 and 5-0.

Jersey Shore beat Danville, 4-1.

In college softball, nationally-ranked West Chester used some timely hitting to sweep over Mansfield. West Chester won the opener 7-4 in eight innings and captured the nightcap, 6-2.

Lock Haven extended its win streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of visiting East Stroudsburg. Lock Haven won game one, 5-2 and took game two, 3-2 on a walk-off wild pitch.

In women’s soccer, Lock Haven announced the return of Rob Eaton to the school as head coach. Eaton, a 1988 LHU graduate, coached the LHU men from 1997-02. He’d spent the last 4 years at Clarion and had coached with the Soccer Training Network since 2002. He was also head coach at Lycoming during the 1990s.

Eaton was named the 2010 PSAC women’s coach of the year at Clarion and the 1997 PSAC men’s coach of the year at LHU. He went 53-32-6 with the LHU men, finishing league runner-up twice.
