Local roundup: Mansfield falls in NCAA opener
No. 2 seed West Virginia Wesleyan scored eight runs on 11 hits to defeat No. 7 seed Mansfield 8-0 in five innings in the opening round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional 2 Tournament on Friday afternoon at Robb Field in Shippensburg.
After a 1-2-3 Mansfield top of the first, Wesleyan’s Alex Furr led of the bottom of the inning with a single before moving to third on a stolen base and sacrifice bunt. Megan Malestyn laced a two-out single to right field to score the Bobcats’ first run before Olivia Gore doubled to plate Malestyn. Back-to-back fielding errors for the Mounties allowed Wesleyan to add two more runs and lead 4-0 after the first inning.
Omichinski went the distance in the circle for the Bobcats, allowing just three hits while striking out five batters.
Kate Pratt took the loss after allowing five earned runs in 1.1 innings. Inman pitched a quality 2.2 innings in relief, allowing just three hits and no earned runs while strking out two.
In high school softball, Brooke Kohler threw a four inning shutout as Wellsboro defeated Liberty 12-0.
Bloomsburg scored seven runs in the first three innings as it went on to defeat Montgomery 13-0.
Muncy had just two hits and eight errors as it fell to Southern Columbia 4-1.
Kaitlyn Cowfer had a homerun and the game-winning double as Jersey Shore defeated Mifflinburg 8-7 in 11 innings. Brianna Stetts threw five scoreless innings for Jersey Shore.
South Williamsport had no hits and allowed Central Columbia to have 12 hits as Central defeated South 15-0.
Marlene Bassett hit a two-run double and Montoursville scored four fifth-inning runs as it overcame a 3-run deficit and defeated Warrior Run, 4-3. The Warriors (9-8) are a win from clinching a playoff berth.
In high school baseball, Hughesville clinched a share of its first baseball HAC-II title as it defeated Lewisburg 5-3. Justin Lambert struck out 11 in six strong innings for Hughesville.
Zach Miller had a two-run homerun as Jersey Shore defeated Danville 4-3. Brody Smith added three hits and Colton Potter added two.
Cody DeHass scored the game winning run on a sacrifice fly by Dawson Prough in the 10th inning as Wellsboro defeated Mansfield 2-1. Joe Allen pitched nine strong innings for Wellsboro as did Mansfield’s Jarrod Burd.
Loyalsock clinched a playoff berth, routing Mount Carmel, 12-5 while delivering 12 hits. Jimmy Webb won his fourth game and had two doubles while Phil Krizan went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, giving Loyalsock (10-5) some momentum for today’s Backyard Brawl.
