Hoffman wins national title

Montoursville’s Gavin Hoffman captured the ASICS Schoolboy Nationals championship at 160 pounds Thursday, completing a tournament which also saw him take second in the country in Greco-Roman wrestling.

Hoffman went 4-0 in the freestyle tournament, winning twice by technical fall, once by decision and once by injury default. The eighth-grader was the only wrestler in the bracket to go unbeaten.

His 10-4 win over Arizona’s Sebastian Mordecai avenged a loss to Mordecai in the Greco-Roman tournament. Hoffman went 2-1 in Greco, falling to Mordecai, 7-6, in the second round of the tournament.

The eighth-grader to be also captured a PJW state championship, his third, earlier this year. He also won his bracket at the middle school division of Flonationals in April.
