Montour captures District 12 banner

A violent thunderstorm Tuesday delayed the start of the District 12 9-10 Baseball championship between Keystone and Montoursville by more than 2 hours.

After the delay, it was all about Montoursville’s Ryan Kennell. Kennell threw a no-hitter, striking out 10, and Montoursville won the District 12 9-10 Baseball championship with a 9-0 win over Keystone.

Kennell opened the sixth inning with a strikeout, earned another in four pitches and ended the game with a groundout. Keystone’s only baserunners came in the third inning after a walk, and in the fourth after Kennell hit a batter.

For Keystone, Kaden Falls was able to open the second inning with a strikeout and pop-out before Montoursville logged its first two hits of the game.

Montoursville opened the scoring in the third inning after Rian Glunk was hit by a pitch. He advanced to third base after a Kennell single and scored on a pop-out to second base. A Gage Reeder double made it 2-0 Montoursville after 2 1/2 innings.

In the bottom of the inning, Matt Conklin earned a five-pitch walk to become Keystone’s first baserunner. Conklin stole second, but was stranded when Kennell recorded one of three third-inning strikeouts.

Keystone earned its second baserunner in the fourth after Kennell plunked his first batter of the game. Keystone’s rally was cut short when Rocco Pulizzi made a snow-cone catch on a solid hit ball over his head. The catch ended the inning and kept Keystone off the board.

Kennell had three hits for Montoursville, which advances to the Section 3 tournament.

Maddix Delana padded Montoursville’s lead in the fifth with a two-run home run. Montoursville, which finished district play unbeaten, including two wins over Keystone, added five more runs in the sixth.

Montoursville won its second district championship in four days after its 11-12 team won a championship on July 4.
