Cutters fall to Auburn

AUBURN – The Doubledays jumped out to a 1-run lead after the first inning and Williamsport couldn’t tie it up, as Auburn tacked on three runs late to defeat Williamsport, 4-0, on Friday night.

After opening up a 1-0 lead in the first, the Doubledays (28-36) scored one in the seventh and put two runs up in the eighth.

Williamsport (30-36) was held to just five hits in the loss while surrendering nine to Auburn.

The Crosscutters fall to 6 1/2 games out of the wildcard chase with the loss.

Jose Pujols led the?Crosscutters’ offense, going 2 for 4 with a double while Rhys Hoskins, Wilson Garcia and Cord Sandberg all had one hit.?Garcia added a double as well.

The Cutters went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, and stranded seven runners on base.

The Doubledays’ Jeff Gardner was solid at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI while both Brian Langlois and Raudy Read each added two hits and added a double, while Read also hit a home run.

With two outs in the first inning, Read came through with his homer to left field, his sixth of the year, to put the Doubledays on top and break the scoreless game open in the first.

After a pitching change in the seventh when Scott Harris replaced Ricardo Pinto for Williamsport, a Jeff Gardner single to right helped bring Brian?Langlois, who reached on a walk, home to make it a 2-0 game.

Auburn then took advantage of another pitching change in the eighth, to add its final two runs.

Read hit his 14th double of the season to center field to drive Jose Marmolejos-Diaz in. Read himself then reached home two batters later when Matthew Page reached on a fielder’s choice out.

The Cutters stay in Auburn for a game today against the Doubledays. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
