Cutters’ offense backs Whitehead

New York-Penn League All-Star Derek Campbell drove in a pair of runs, as did Jose Pujols in his first game with Williamsport as the Crosscutters opened a weekend road trip with a 4-1 win over Mahoning Valley.

The offensive output backed another strong outing from starting pitcher David Whitehead who allowed just one run over five inning for the Cutters to pick up his fourth win of the season. Edubray Ramos pitched a pair of hitless innings to pick up the save.

Campbell was one of two Cutters to record a pair of hits – Jiandido Tromp also had two – and his first-inning single with two outs scored the Cutters’ first run for a 1-0 lead. Campbell also doubled with two outs in the top of the sixth inning.

Pujols, an 18-year old from the Dominican Republic, joined the team Friday after spending the summer with the Gulf Coast League Phillies. Following Campbell’s sixth-inning double, Pujols doubled to right field to score a pair of runs and give Williamsport a 4-1 lead. Pujols has 30 RBIs between the two levels this year.
