Defender girls break away from NEB

MIDDLEBURG — Being in the district playoffs are far from new territory for the Warrior Run girls soccer team. And more than likely, the team didn’t have any jitters or nerves entering the quarterfinals on Saturday at Midd-West High School.

But if there were any jitters, they were gone about four minutes into the game. That’s all it took for the Defenders to get on the scoreboard and the goals seemingly didn’t stop.

By the end of the 80 minutes, Warrior Run won in a rout, 8-0, against Northeast Bradford in the District 4 Class A quarterfinals on Saturday in Middleburg.

With the win, Warrior Run advances to face Line Mountain on Tuesday at Midd-West at 6.

“That’s what we’ve been working on all season is just to put them away as soon as we can. Play rest of game just as hard because when we come out like that and intensity is that high, it set tone for rest of game and makes everything a lot easier,” Warrior Run goalie Madi Welliver said. “We work more as a unit.”

Welliver etched her place in the history books as she recorded her 58th career shutout, tying Owen J. Roberts’ Anna Bevan (2001-04) for most in Pennsylvania history for girls soccer.

Warrior Run got two goals from Gabby Heiss, Keirra Trivelpiece and and freshman Paige Bowman. Heiss also dished out three assists.

“I’m pretty happy with (my performance). If I don’t get chance to shoot it, I know that there’s always someone in front of net so I go to cross it,” Heiss said.

Bowman scored her two goals in the first half to help Warrior Run build a 3-0 lead just 12 minutes into the game. Heiss scored with 5:47 to play to puit the Defenders ahead, 4-0, and Madie Majcher scored off a Maddie Beyer assist with 55 seconds to play in the first half to give the Defenders a 5-0 lead.

Warrior Run came out strong in the second half as well, scoring two goals in a 35-second span to go ahead 7-0.

Welliver then scored the team’s final goal with 12:15 to play to make it an 8-0 game. Warrior Run limited Northeast Bradford to just one shot the entire game.
