Local roundup: Hughesville boys sneak into playoffs

Lucas Shultz scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime for his fourth goal of the game in Sullivan County’s 5-4 win over Hughesville in boys soccer.

Despite the loss, Hughesville (7-11) qualified as the No. 8 seed for the District 4 Class AA playoffs and will face No. 1 seeded Lewisburg at a time and place to be determined.

Hughesville got goals from four players as Austin Lewis, Ryan Strimple, Nick Sharayko and Rylan Hicks all scored.

Milton defeated Shamokin, 7-1. Brent Artley led Milton with two goals. Alex Yoder had a goal and two assists and Ben Babakov had a goal and assist in the win.

Muncy’s Caleb Smith scored twice as the Indians defeated Troy, 8-1. Bryce Phillips, Jordan Yaple, Nathan Paisley, Nathan Wetherhold, Dan Hall and Takoda Moyer all scored as well.

Donovan Killian scored a trio of goals and added an assist as South Williamsport beat Mount Carmel, 10-1, to finish the regular season. The Mounties had 30 shots on goal.

Michael Gonazalez scored a goal and assisted on three others.

• In girls soccer, Gabby Heiss scored a pair of goals and assisted on another as Warrior Run closed the regular season with a 3-0 win over Bloomsburg.

Lanie Urbanski gave the Defenders a 1-0 lead with a first-half goal, and the Warrior Run defense made the lead stand up by not allowing a shot on goal.

Madi Welliver recorded the shutout in goal, the 57th of her career.

Kelsey Logan recorded a hat trick and dished out an assist and Emma Poirier had two goals and an assist as Wellsboro defeated North Penn-Mansfield, 7-1.

Julia Smith had a goal and assist for the Green Hornets as well.

NPM’s goal came from Libby Vogel on a Megan Derstine assist. Alaina McKee had 21 saves for NPM in the loss.

Macy McCarthy had three goals as Sullivan County blanked Wyalusing, 8-0. Leah Beinlich added two goals and Savannah Baldwin had two assists.

Loyalsock beat Williamsport, 5-0, in the regular-season finale as both teams are headed to the postseason next week. Williamsport will be the top seed in District 2-4 Class AAAA.

Loyalsock (15-2-1) got goals from Myriah Saar, Sarah Van Fleet, Hailey Zurich, Sam Stopper and Olivia Czap.

Megan Weber had a hat trick and assist in South Williamsport’s 6-1 win over Millville in the Mounties’ season finale.

Haley Neidig had a goal and assist and Paige Lentz had three assists for the Mounties (7-10-1).

Morgan Jacobs scored twice, Autumn Avery had a goal and assist and Hughesville blanked Montgomery, 6-0. Jayden Leighow, Morgan Hopkins and Sarah Pysher all also scored as well.

• Cowanesque Valley lost in three sets (25-22, 25-21, 25-19) to Canton. CV got 14 digs from Andrea DeSera and Amaya Walker. Walker also had a team-high nine kills.
