Local roundup: Loyalsock girls rout Troy in districts

In girls soccer, in the quarterfinals of the District 4 Class AA playoffs, My­riah Saar scored four goals, giving her 50 career goals as Loyalsock defeated Troy, 8-1 Thursday evening at Millville. Rhiallie Jessell had four assists, Jesse Hunt had two goals and Ana Barone had two assists.

Loyalsock had four first-half goals, including three between the 15th and 22nd minutes.

“We were moving the ball really well on them,” said Loyalsock coach Ben Comfort. “Just to move the ball in the field, things were opening up, getting  a lot of looks, a lot of shots from about 20 yards out. Just a really good effort from the offense.”

Loyalsock plays Central Columbia Monday at Mill­ville at 6 in the semifinals.

• In men’s soccer, Dela­ware Valley netted a pair of second half goals en route to a 2-0 win over Penn College. Penn College missed two breakaways opportunities early in the second half when Luke McFalls fired wide in the 44th minute and Austin Dowrick’s attempt was stopped in the 39th minute.

• In women’s volleyball, Penn State Altoona knocked off Penn College 3-1. After Penn College won the first set 25-17, Altoona won the next three, 25-21, 25-11, and 25-22.

• In basketball,  Lock Haven women’s basketball team was picked sixth in the 2016 PSAC East Pre­season Coaches’ Poll, released Thursday by the conference.

The Bald Eagles are coming off back-to-back playoff appearances after a 24-year hiatus. Lock Haven finished 11-16 overall last season and was 8-14 in the conference, earning a No. 6 seed for the playoffs.

Lock Haven returns two starters from last year’s team in Mackenzie Livingston, who averaged 10.5 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game, and Lysa Mealing, who averaged 8.9 points per game and had 13.7 rebounds per game.

Mansfield returns seven players, including starters Brielle Kelly, Mary Kate Rumbaugh and Tianna Jackson. The trio combined for 23.9 points per game, led by Kelly’s 12.1 average.

• In men’s basketball, with five starters back from last year’s Lycoming team, the Warriors were selected to finish first in the MAC Commonwealth, garnering six first-place votes.

Lebanon Valley was selected second wtih three first-place votes. Rounding out the rest of the poll in order was Arcadia, Alvernia, Albright, Widener, Hood, Stevenson and Messiah. Hood and Stevenson were tied for seventh.

Lycoming finished 19-10 last year for the program’s eighth consecutive winning season under Guy Rancourt.  Nyk King returns, who averaged 12.7 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game. Also back is David Johnson (12.2 ppg), T.J. Duckett (10.6 ppg), Alexis Newbould (10.4 ppg) and Chris Wallace (10.4 ppg).

After three consecutive PSAC playoff appearances, Lock Haven was picked seventh in the PSAC Eastern Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Last year the Bald Eagles were 12-15 overall and 8-15 in the PSAC.

Mansfield lost leading scorer Thomas Moore, but second-year coach Pat Zipfel is happy with what they accomplished in the offseason. Mansfield does return four of its top six scorers, including Matt Tamanosky.
