Local roundup: Lycoming men win in double overtime

Kyle Thomas floated to the far post and connected, sending a shot past the goalline in the 109th minute to lift Lycoming’s men’s soccer team to a 3-2 double-overtime win over 21st-ranked SUNY Oneonta on Monday. Lycoming was down to its last chance in the game, earning a corner kick in the 109th minute. As both teams settled into position, Jake Webb delivered a perfect kick over the center of the scrum to the far post, where Thomas kicked in the game-winner to give the Warriors their first win on the road against a ranked team in program history.

• In women’s soccer, Penn College snapped a three-game skid with a 4-1 win over Clarks Summit. The Wildcats improved to 10-8 and became just the second squad in program history to reach double-digit wins.

Danielle Lentz scored her eighth career goal to tie the game but Millersville scored in the second overtime to pull out a 2-1 win. It marked the second game in a row, and a school-record sixth time, Mansfield has gone into overtime this season. Four of the Mountaineers last seven games have been decided after the end of regulation.

• In the opening round of the District 4 Class A girls soccer playoffs, Kiah Russell, the Northeast Bradford goalie, scored the game-winner as NEB defeated Muncy, 3-2, in a shootout. Bailey Bowen started off the shootout with a goal and Morgan Fries of NEB answered. Two scoreless rounds went by before Sasha McMonigle scored for Muncy but was answered by Katy Jefferson. Muncy couldn’t answer in the next round as Russell finished the game.

“NEB came prepared to give us a good game,” said Muncy coach Kyle Bowen. “Our defense did a great job all game keeping NEB from getting a quality shot on goal. On the other end, we sent a number good balls in front of the goal but just couldn’t put any of them in the net. To play 0-0 for 110 minutes and then be 2-2 going into each team’s 5th kicks from the penalty mark, that is an exciting game. I am so proud of our girls for their efforts on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball throughout the game.”

• In District 4 Class A boys, Muncy beat Lourdes, 3-1. Caleb Smith scored twice for the Indians and Daniel Hall added a goal.

Lourdes tied the game in the 41st minute at 1-1 before Muncy scored twice to go ahead. Josh Hall had four saves for Muncy.

“Muncy set the tempo early and controlled possession of the game against a good team in Lourdes. Muncy scored late in the second half but Lourdes responded with an early goal on the second half leveling the playing field,” Muncy coach Steve Ertel said. “Muncy handled the adversity well, fought back, showed true character and finished the game, 3-1.”

Muncy faces East Juniata in the next round of the Class A playoffs.

• In the opening round of the Class AAA team tennis state playoffs in girls tennis at the West Branch Club Tuesday afternoon, Williamsport fell to Unionville, 5-0. Williamsport won the District 2-4 Class AAA championship two weeks ago to complete a 16-2 season. Williamsport’s No. 1 singles player, Amanda Southard won the District 2-4 singles championship and returns to the court on Friday, Nov. 4 for the singles state tournament at the Hershey Racquet Club.

In the opening round of the Class AA team tennis state playoffs at the West Branch Tennis Club, Rachel Thomas picked up a tough win at No. 1 singles but it wasn’t enough as Hughesville fell to Bethlehem Catholic, 4-1. After losing the first set 6-2, Thomas came back and won the last two sets, 6-3 and 11-9. Hughesville won the District 4 team tennis championship last week when it defeated Milton, 3-0. Hughesville finished the season 18-3.

• In women’s volleyball, Tayler Whitman posted 14 kills and hit .320 to lead Lycoming, but a solid-hitting Lebanon Valley posted a 3-1 (25-17, 25-12, 26-28, 25-23) MAC Commonwealth win but Lycoming still locked up the fifth-seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Championship despite the loss. The Warriors locked up the fifth-seed thanks to a 3-0 win by Messiah over Albright. Lycoming will visit fourth-seeded Widener in the opening round of the MAC Commonwealth Championship on Oct. 31.

• In wrestling, Seth Lansberry and Nolan Barger will begin the 2016-17 season as the frontrunners in Division III wrestling, sitting first and second in their weight classes, respectively, while the Lycoming wrestling team will start the season ranked ninth according to the NWCA preseason rankings by Intermat.

Lansberry’s preseason ranking of first is the first time a Warrior has topped the individual rankings in head coach Roger Crebs’ 24-year tenure, doing so in a loaded 149-pound bracket. Lansberry finished 38-5 as a junior, finishing fourth at the NCAA Championships to earn his first All-American honors.

Barger starts the season ranked second in the country, where he sat during all of 2015-16.
