Local roundup: Williamsport’s Southard wins the D2-4 AAA girls tennis title

Williamsport’s Amanda Southard won the District 2-4 Class AAA singles championship Friday at Wilkes-Barre’s Kirby Park with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Hazleton’s Stephanie Mazurek.

Southard beat Hazleton’s Lily Nowak, 6-1, 6-4, in the semifinals.

Mazurek advanced to the final with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Williamsport’s Katie Meale.

Southard is also part of the Williamsport team that claimed the District 2-4 AAA team title earlier in the week. She also joins South Williamsport’s Anya Plotnikova and Loyalsock’s Sarah Malone from Class AA as area qualifiers for the PIAA championships Nov. 4-5 in Hershey.

In girls volleyball, Cowanesque Valley fell 25-12, 25-20, 12-25, 25-23 to Northern Potter. Amaya Walker had 10 kills and 16 digs for CV.

In women’s volleyball, Kristine Jahn became the 11th player in program history to reach 900 career kills and senior Tayler Whitman tied a career high with 15 kills to lead Lycoming, but Hunter College was able to win three close sets in a 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-22, 25-22) win to open the Elmira Invitational.

Bucknell fell 25-17, 25-15, 25-17 to Army. Allie Strong had 15 kills for the Bison.

A balanced offense led Lock Haven past visiting East Stroudsburg, 26-24, 23-25, 25-16, 26-24.

Sarah Gomish led the Bald Eagles with 17 kills and she hit .341 on the match.

In field hockey, Lock Haven beat Colgate, 5-0, for its third shutout in four games and fifth of the season.
