Milton at Mifflinburg football preview

Milton facts: The Black Panthers are hoping to snap a 15-game losing streak and deal a rival’s playoff hopes a blow tonight. Milton is young and is dressing a little more than 20 players per game. Combine that with a rigorous schedule and it is not surprising to see Milton having troubles. The Panthers have been shut out four times, including in each of their past three games. Sophomore quarterback Phil Davis has shown potential and threw for 153 yards two weeks ago against Montoursville. He also threw for 98 yards and a touchdown in Week 2 against Warrior Run. Eric Wilt leads Milton in rushing and returned a kickoff for a touchdown in that Warrior Run game. Jalil Garrison leads the team in receiving and also is a solid defensive back.

Milton player to watch–Xavi Rodriguez: The two-way starter became Milton’s first 100-yard receiver in three years when he caught six passes for 102 yards against Mount Carmel. Rodriguez also intercepted a pass in the end zone against defending Class AA state champion Southern Columbia on its opening possession three weeks ago.

Mifflinburg facts: The Wildcats can clinch the fourth and final District 4 Class AAA playoff berth with a win tonight and a Lewisburg loss at Bloomsburg. That is despite losing three straight games. Mifflinburg could be dangerous in the postseason. It defeated five-win Jersey Shore and is a few plays from being 4-4, losing two one-point games to Central Columbia and Warrior Run. Mifflinburg squandered a 13-point second-half lead against Central and lost 7-6 at Warrior Run with leading rusher Brayden Pierce sidelined. Mifflinburg trailed Shikellamy by only seven early in the fourth quarter last week but allowed 21 straight points in a 35-7 loss. The Wildcats turned the ball over six time, although quarterback Josh Foster threw for 152 yards. Despite missing a game, Pierce still has a shot at reaching 1,000 yards for a second straight season and ran for 239 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-21 win over Shamokin that Ryan Oliver won with a last-second 40-yard field goal. Three Mifflinburg losses are by a combined nine points.

Mifflinburg player to watch–Cole Laubach: He missed three games with an injury, but Laubach is a three-way threat who leads the team in receiving and also is dangerous on special teams. Laubach caught four passes for 80 yards against Central Mountain.

Outlook: Milton seems just too young and banged up to pull the upset tonight.
