Mounties head to playoffs with win

South Williamsport will head to the playoffs on a high note as it beat the Line Mountain Eagles, 41-33 on senior night. Sticking with their identity, South Williamsport gave running back Gideon Green the green light with 26 carries for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  Fullback Ashton Martin also had 10 touches for 78 yards to not overload Green who came back after sitting out last week with an injury.

“It’s the last week of the season, everyone is hurting a little bit.  We were going to use Green sparingly, he was eager to get in there and help his team win,” said South coach Chris Eiswerth.

The Mounties overall rushed for 193 yards. Quarterback AJ Flick was 5 for 10 for 91 yards, an interception, and two touchdowns.

Four of those passes landing in the hands of Aaron Guerrisky for 82 yards. South Wiliamsport finishes the regular season 9 and 1, getting seeded at least 3rd depending on the game betweeen NP-Mansfield and Wellsboro which was delayed and will be continued later on today.  Line Mountain (6-4) will await the final of that game as well, it will travel to the loser of NP-Mansfield and Wellsboro for its first round playoff game.

On the other side of the ball, South’s defense was stout in holding dual threat quarterback Kenny Boyer to just 56 passing yards, 27 yards on the ground and just 6 points in the first half. As its offense created a 2 score lead going into the half  20-6.

Line Mountain did not go down without a fight in the second half.  The Eagles had a change in game plan as they were able to get big plays on the ground and through the air.  On their first two drives of the second half, Line Mountain scored on a 65 yard run from running back Brent Osman. Then the second drive set up by an interception from Cregger, was capped off by a 73-yard pass from Boyer to wideout, Brendan Cregger, bringing the score within 2 20-18.

“Line Mountain is very explosive with their speed and size, they’re big.  We knew it was going to be a barn burner, it was just a matter of time,” said Eiswerth.  From there, Boyer was able to find his rhythm, rushing for 30 yards and going 6 for 9 for 186 yards passing 3 touchdowns, 2 to Cregger and another 54 yard pass to Breven Derek.

Green was able to get in on the scoring action as he took over the second half after just having 17 yards on the ground, he gained 131 yards and both of his scores. South was able to balance their attack and add to the lead as Flick connected with Martin for a 6 yard pass 7 minutes left in the game.

“Next week is a new season, it’s win or go home. We will continue to do what we do.” Eiswerth said.  South Williamsport will be home next week in the opening round of the playoffs against Hughesville or Mt. Carmel. The Mounties did not face Mt. Carmel this season, but won 23-7 over Hughesville in Week 3.
