ROUNDUP: Williamsport boys, girls earn top playoff seeds
The Williamsport boys and girls soccer teams each garnered the top seed for their respective District 2/4 Class AAAA playoffs and will host semifinal games Wednesday.
Both teams will host Hazleton in a doubleheader at Balls Mills on Wednesday at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.
Montoursville’s girls earned the top seed in the District 4 Class AA tournament and will open the tournament against No. 8 seed Lewisburg on Thursday at Hughesville at 8 p.m.
Defending state champion Lewisburg earned the top seed in the Class AA boys tournament and opens the postseason against eighth-seeded Hughesville in the quarterfinals on Saturday at Central Columbia.
Lewisburg earned the No. 2 seed in the District 4 Class A field hockey playoffs. The Green Dragons open the tournament against No. 7 East Juniata at Selinsgrove on Thursday at 5 p.m.
• The Bucknell field hockey team celebrated senior day by defeating Lock Haven, 1-0, in double overtime in a non-conference game at Graham Field. Sophomore Katie Mannino scored the game-winning goal with an assist from freshman Marisa Morakis with 3:01 left in the second overtime.
“Lock Haven is such a strong team. They are athletic and fast, so we feel very fortunate to get this win,” said Bucknell head coach Jeremy Cook.
Junior Emily Finn recorded her second consecutive shutout and her fifth of the season as Bucknell improved to 8-8 overall.
• Penn State Berks, the reigning North Eastern Athletic Conference champions, edged Penn College 1-0 in NEAC women’s soccer.
Following a scoreless first half, the Lions got on the board in the 60th minute when Caitlin Golden bounced a shot off the left post and into the back of the net.
• Penn State Berks shut out Penn College, 4-0, in NEAC men’s soccer.
Berks struck twice in the first half when T.J. Yurkovic netted a shot in the 17th minute and Trent Moyer put one in in the 29th minute. Cole Mays made it 3-0 in the 83rd minute and Robert Ekvail netted the final score for Berks in the 87th minute.
• Sophomore Callan Jordan led the Lycoming College men’s swimming team with wins in the 50- and 100-yard backstroke in its season-opening MAC meet, but the men’s team fell, 145-105, and the women, 155-94, at Albright.
Jordan led the way for the Warriors posting a time of 55.73 to win the 100-yard backstroke and after a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (51.93), he won the 50-yard backstroke (26.87) in the next race.
Sophomore Emilie Kramer led the women’s team, as she won the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.93) and finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.13) and the 100-yard freestyle (58.02).
