Growing pains continue for Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN — For the young and inexperienced Lock Haven University women’s basketball team, the growing pains continue.

Falling behind early again, it was all uphill for LHU as it fell 80-65 to the Griffins on Sunday afternoon at Thomas Field House.

After shooting just 31 percent from the field while turning the ball over 30 times in the loss to IUP, things got a little better twenty-four hours later with 37 percent from the floor and 24 turnovers.

“It is a small step in the right direction,” said LHU head coach Jennifer Smith about the new numbers. “Just as long as it is a step in the right direction, even though they might be small now, it is an improvement. It is a long season and we just to have to be in it for the long haul.”

If there was one area of their game that caused them a lot of problems it was digging themselves a hole early in the game.

“We just have to figure out how to start games and not dig ourselves a deep hole,” said Smith. “We are working on changing the starting lineup and meshing the starting lineup, but we do have to figure out how to come out and play without digging ourselves into a hole.”

Although not happy with the start and the loss, Smith was very positive about what she saw from her troops in the second half.

“I felt that we did get better today in the second half,” said Smith. “I guess that is going to take some time because we are a young team, especially with young kids learning how to play the point. We have to be patient, but also have a sense of urgency all at once.”
