Local roundup: Lady Eagles win at home

LOCK HAVEN – Unlike the recent presidential election, no re-count was necessary Tuesday night to determine the winner between Penn State-DuBois and Lock Haven Tuesday night in women’s non-conference basketball.

Coming out hard and strong, the Lady Eagles built up a 15-point first quarter lead and stretched it to an overwhelming 78-32 win over the Lady Lions at the final buzzer.

“We set goals tonight in different categories and we met all of them but two,” said LHU head coach Jennifer Smith. “For us, that is a step in the right direction, but we still have a lot of work to do.”

Two trouble areas have been in field goal shooting and turnovers. In the win over PSU-DuBois, both of those areas showed definite improvement as LHU shot 46 percent for the game while only coughing the ball up 11 times.

“We are focusing on fundamentals and we are getting better,” said Smith. “We are trying to keep things simple and correct the things that matter.”

Good defense led to good transition offense and many good shots as the Lady Eagles sprinted to a 20-5 lead at the end of the first period. Keeping the pressure on, the Lady Eagles extended their lead to 37-13 at halftime.

So dominant was LHU on defense that PSU-DuBois didn’t reach a double-digit point total until 1:35 remained in the first half.

“I think our speed and athleticism showed tonight,” said Smith. “We were much better with intensity and defensive pressure.”

Leading the Lady Eagles to the win was Lysa Mealing with a double-double (10 boards and 12 points). Joining Mealing in double figures were Ayanda McGill-Jefferson with a game-high 14 and Kayla Henderson with an even 10.

Maimuna Kenneh narrowly missed a double-double with 15 rebounds and nine points.

Now 2-3, the Lady Eagles hit the roadways this weekend for PSAC games at Gannon and Clarion.

“Those are two big games for us,” said Smith. “They are two games we can win if we get things put in the right place.”

Elsewhere, Elmira dealt winless Penn College a 65-23 setback in a non-conference game.
