ROUNDUP: Lycoming wrestlers sweep duals

Bonus points, including five pins, helped the Lycoming College wrestling team to a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon, defeating Washington & Jefferson, 39-5, and Elizabethtown, 31-18.

The Warriors (6-1 overall) lost just six of 20 bouts during the varsity portion of the event, to secure the pair of wins and they were also awarded a 60-0 forfeit win over Penn College.

Jersey Shore graduate Hadyn Swartwood won a pair of matches for Lycoming at 157 pounds. Top-ranked Seth Lansberry won with a technical fall and a pin. Two-time All-American Nolan Barger earned a major decision and a fall for the Warriors.

• Lock Haven opened dual-meet action Sunday at the Cavalier Duals and the Bald Eagles split a pair of matches. Lock Haven rallied for a thrilling 20-18 win over Maryland in the day’s opener, and LHU looked poised for another comeback-win vs. host-Virginia, but the Cavaliers held on a for a 24-16 victory.

In the thrilling win over Maryland, the Bald Eagles won 6 of 10 bouts, including the final four as they rallied past the Terps. Thomas Haines’ 8-1 win at 285 gave LHU the victory.

Penn State came away with eight champions at the Keystone Classic at Penn as the Nittany Lions rolled to the team title by more than 100 points.

Nick Suriano (125 pounds), Zain Retherford (149), Jason Nolf (157), Vincenzo Joseph (165), Shakur Rasheed (174), Bo Nickal (184), Matt McCutcheon (197) and Nick Nevills (285) all won titles.

Retherford was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler after going 5-0 with five falls for his title.

• Mansfield held No. 5 California to its lowest point total of the season, but the defending PSAC champions were too much for the Mounties coming away with a 73-37 in women’s basketball.

Mansfield slowed the game down and limited possessions, but was stymied by 9 of 40 shooting from the field .

Sophomore Becca Painter scored a career-high 11 points and Lycoming held the lead for nearly 30 minutes, but Elizabethtown used a late run in the fourth quarter to post a 61-50 win in the championship game of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic at Franklin & Marshall’s Mayser Gymnasium.

Junior Shelby Mueller posted nine points, seven rebounds and three steals as she made the all-tournament team for Lycoming.

• Malik Carter scored a game-high 21 points and Jahmir Green came up with a key rebound and steal in the final seconds as Mansfield held off California, 73-70, in men’s college basketball.

• Charlie Niehaus recorded 15 saves, Rade Joksimovic scored four goals and Sean Daley posted five assists as the No. 12 Bucknell men’s water polo team defeated No. 18 George Washington, 11-5, in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship title game, earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
