Local roundup: Lewisburg boys win by two at Hughesville

Hughesville fell behind 15-3 early but battled back late but it wasn’t enough as Lewisburg held off a late Spartan rally in the Green Dragons’ 52-50 win in boys basketball on Monday at Hughesville. Dylan Farronato led all scorers with 24 points while Sal Brown added 16 for Lewisburg. Landon Henry had 15 points and Matt Myers scored 10 as Hughesville outscored Lewisburg 36-25 in the second half.

• In college wrestling, Alfred State dealt Penn College a 35-13 setback. Ben Doll picked up an action-packed 21-13 major decision at 125 to give the Wildcats an early 4-0 lead. Joe Swank earned a forfeit at 157 and Dylan Otis edged out Jeff Andrews, 5-4, at heavyweight for Penn College’s final points of the meet.

DJ Fehlman of the Lock Haven has been named this week’s PSAC Athlete of the Week. Fehlman, who moved down to 133 pounds in late December continued to dominate at the weight class, registering a 2-0 weekend for the Bald Eagles.

• In men’s basketball, Missouri State forward and St. John Neumann graduate Alize Johnson has been named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the fifth time this season, tying a school record. Johnson became just the second MVC player in 20 seasons to post 26 points and 20 rebounds in a game when he did so in the Bears’ road win at Indiana State on Jan. 18. His 20 rebounds also tied a Missouri State single-game standard during the school’s Division I era, becoming the first MSU player since 1990.

For the third consecutive week and fifth time this season, Lock Haven’s Amir Hinton has been named the PSAC East Freshman of the Week. Over last week’s two-game span that saw LHU go 1-1 in PSAC East play, Hinton averaged 29 points.

• In college football, Lycoming seniors Blake Bowman, Bailey Hughes and Austin Mital each earned a slot on the Academic All-MAC football team.
