ROUNDUP: PSU wrestling thumps Huskers

The Penn State wrestling team won three matchups of Top-5 ranked wrestlers on its way to a 27-14 win over No. 6 Nebraska in college wrestling Sunday.

True freshman Nick Suriano, ranked third, opened the dual with a 3-2 win over No. 5 Tim Lambert at 125 pounds. At 157 pounds, top-ranked Jason Nolf posted a 15-7 major decision win over No. 3 Tyler Berger. And at 184, second-ranked Bo Nickal defeated No. 3 T.J. Dudley, 10-5.

Benton graduate Zain Retherford remained unbeaten with a 19-6 major decision at 149 pounds for the Nittany Lions.

• Nana Foulland had 17 points and eight rebounds in leading the Bucknell men to a 68-49 victory over Holy Cross, the fourth straight win for the Bison. Zach Thomas added 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Kimbal Mackenzie and Nate Sestina, who made all five of his shots, scored 10 points apiece for Bucknell (12-5, 4-0 Patriot), which was 27 of 51 from the floor for 53 percent while outrebounding the Crusaders 41-21. The Bison have started 4-0 in league play for the second straight season.

Ben Sosa and Erik Eichinger scored clutch baskets in the final 90 seconds to help Penn College to a 76-75 win over Wilson College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game. Sosa finished with a team-high 20 points for Penn College, while Thomas Ross added 19 and Jesse White finished with 13.

• Penn College picked up its first win this season with a 67-62 win over Wilson College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game. Alicia Ross scored a game-high 36 points for Penn College, going 12 of 26, and grabbed a game-best 12 rebounds.  Gwendolyn Lavelle added nine points and Jane Herman and Maddie Wenk both finished with eight.

Bucknell women’s basketball is off to its best start in program history following a 77-48 win over Holy Cross. Ten players scored for the Bison as they improved to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference with their seventh consecutive win. Senior Claire DeBoer paced the Bison with 19 points and eight rebounds. She had 14 points at the half thanks to 5-of-6 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 mark from beyond the arc. Sophomore Kaitlyn Slagus joined her in double-figures with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Bucknell led 15-11 after one quarter and extended the lead to nine, 32-23, at the half. The Bison pulled away with a 23-9 advantage in the third quarter. The 29-point victory was the largest over Holy Cross in program history and upped the team’s winning streak over the Crusaders to three games. The Bison also upped their home winning streak to 19 straight games.
