Slow start dooms LHU women

LOCK HAVEN —  As the temperatures outside fell, unfortunately for the Lock Haven University women’s basketball team, their shots didn’t.

Held scoreless for the first 7-plus minutes. the Lady Eagles didn’t get on the scoreboard until Lysa Mealing hit a layup with 2:40 left in the opening period. By that time, Millersville had run off 11 unanswered points off the opening tip for a 15-2 lead, an advantage they stretched to 18-4 to end the first quarter in what became a 64-46 Millersville win.

“It was a tough start and it wasn’t because we didn’t have some good looks (at the basket), said LHU head coach Jennifer Smith. “We just couldn’t put the ball in the basket for the entire first half.”

The Lady Eagles waded through some games with poor field goal shooting and could only show a meager effort of 15 percent from the field during the opening 20 minutes. Add to that a rebounding deficit of 10 and it spelled trouble.

For the game, the Lady Eagles shot 28 percent, but they lost rebounding battle, 50-32.

“We got beat on the boards, but it is tough when you have two of your best post players out (of action),” said Smith. “But that is no excuse because other players have to step up. There were too many tips that we could have had as well as a lot of 50-50 balls. Tomorrow is another day to get better, letting the bad go and just concentrate on getting better.”

Leading the Lady Eagles in the scorebook was Lysa Mealing with 12 points, while Ayanda McGill-Jefferson was a point behind Mealing with 11 points. Jefferson added 10 boards to her point total for her double-double.

“I am happy with the double-double, but I would like to see us win.” said Jefferson. “It is what it is and in the beginning we just couldn’t any shots to fall. As a result we fell way behind.”

Now 6-7 and 3-6 in the PSAC East, the Lady Eagles will have to get better in a hurry as they travel to Cheyney Wednesday before returning homet to Shippensburg Saturday at 2.
