Local roundup: Baumunk puts up double-double for Sullivan boys

Alex Baumunk recorded a double-double to lead Sullivan County over Troy, 52-31, in boys basketball on Saturday.

Baumunk finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds as John Saxe added 18 points for the Griffins.

• Matt Tamanosky and Malik Carter combined to score 50 points to lead Mansfield to a 90-66 win over Alfred State in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon on First Citizens Community Bank Court in Decker Gymnasium. Tamanosky scored a team-high 26 for Mansfield (10-14, 8-13 PSAC) and Carter added 24.

Loyalsock grad Ben Sosa scored 27, going 15 for 18 from the free throw line, in Penn College’s 87-77 loss to Wells College. Erik Perry Jr. added 17, Erik Eichinger scored 13 and Williamsport grad Thomas Ross added 12.

• Jane Herman posted her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, but Penn College lost its final game, 66-36, to Wells College.

Gwen Lavelle scored 12 and Maddie Wenk added nine points and eight boards for the Wildcats (3-22, 3-16 NEAC).

Claire DeBoer was one of four Bucknell women’s players in double figures as the Bison defeated Boston University, 73-56. DeBoer had 19 points and Kyi English added 13. Megan McGurk scored 12 and Sune Swart chipped in 10.

• Lock Haven went 1-1 in Day 2 of the Snow Bird Freeze Out Tournament at Myrtyle Beach, South Carolina on Saturday, losing the opener to Wilmington, 7-0, before beating Glenville State, 5-2.

Against Wilmington, LHU was held to just four hits as McKenna Garlock went 2 for 3 with a double. Wilmington also hit three home runs in the win. Bekah Slattery struck out 11 in the loss.

Statistics from the win over Glenville State were not available.

Bucknell made it three straight victories to start the 2017 season, including two straight against Gardner-Webb, the host team in the Runnin’ Bulldogs Invitational. Bucknell beat Gardner-Webb, 8-2, and lost to Seton Hall, 18-8, in six inning.

Paulina Gutkin had an RBI-triple and 3-run double in the fifth inning for the Bison in the win over Gardner-Webb. In game two, Bucknell’s Marisa Alemany was 3 for 4 and Gutkin went 2 for 3.

• In college baseball, King rallied from one-run deficits in both games of a doubleheader to spoil Mansfield’s season opener in Tennessee, 6-3 and 2-1.

Peter Pena had a double and scored a run in the fourth for Mansfield in the first game that helped make it a 4-3 deficit. Canton grad Chase Pepper threw the first four innings for Mansfield.

In the second game, Mansfield took a 1-0 lead after twoo, but King scored two unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

• Ursinus defeated Penn College in college wrestling, 47-3. The Wildcats only win came at 165 pounds when Tanner Leid won by decision over Jarret DiGiantomasso, 2-1. The Bears had a 26-0 lead before Leid’s win.

• Lycoming sophomore Andrew Ream led the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team with three goals in its season-opener, but Susquehanna University used a four-goal second quarter and held on for a 12-9 win at Sassafras Field in non-conference action. After falling behind 6-3 at the break, the Warriors (0-1 overall) rallied early in the fourth quarter to close within a goal at 10-9 with 10:14 left.

• The Lock Haven University women’s indoor track and field team capped their regular season as they competed at the Marc Deneault Invitational hosted at Cornell University.

Rashana Tompkins won the 60 hurdles in 9.26 seconds, finishing ninth. Stephanie Williams’ weight throw of 41-11.25 was 12th and Lydia Werner’s long jump of 16-9.25 was good enough for eighth place. All were PSAC qualifying marks.

Mansfield’s Jenny Bellefluer hit a PSAC qualifying mark in the 200-meter dash in 26.67 as the Mansfield sophomore finished 10th overall at the Cornell Deneault Invitational. Kenzie Jones improved her PSAC time in the mile with an indoor best 5:21.61 to finish 12th.

• In men’s track and field, Lock Haven had nine hit PSAC qualifying marks, including Julien Freeman who qualified in both the triple and long jumps.

Brian Zimmerman and Ryan Cruz qualified in the 200; Sam Signor and Jack Felt qualified in the 800; Mitchell Coakley qualified in the mile; Addison Monroe qualified in the 3K; Shane Beavers qualified in the shot put; Lamier Dodson and Jimmy Werner both qualified in the weight throw.

In the 5K, Mansfield’s Ryan Clifford ran to a PR of 15:55.46, but it was just .26 seconds from a conference qualifying event for the Mountie sophomore, who was fifth overall at the Penn State Tune-Up.

• The Lock Haven University swimming team competed at day three of at the PSAC Championships where Freshman Kristin Allen swam to a Saturday night final in the 200-yard fly. Allen swam a two-second personal best in the morning sessions (2:18.33) to qualify for the afternoon.

She placed 23rd overall.

In the 100 breast, Raechel Rodriguez finished with a season-best time of 1:09.80 for 27th place, just outside the PSAC qualification mark.

• The Bucknell women’s water polo team opened play at the Mercyhurst Invitational, splitting its first two matches. The Bison began the day with a 9-7 loss to George Washington, but rebounded for a 17-5 win over Mercyhurst.
