Shore girls win their first playoff game in 11 years
JERSEY SHORE – Jersey Shore beat Shamokin Thursday night, 43-37, in the District 4 Class AAAA girls basketball playoffs. It’s the Bulldogs’ first postseason win since 2006.
Jersey Shore (18-5) head coach Darrin Bischof was extremely nervous, but the result brought a return to the state playoffs as well, as the top four teams go from District 4 AAAA.
“I think I was more nervous than the girls,” said Bischof. “I thought we played with butterflies in our stomachs in the first four minutes, but after that we started playing our style of basketball.”
Up next is Montoursville in the semifinals at a time and place to be determined.
Both teams were firing and scoring shots all over the court in the first quarter, but the Indians ended up leading 13-9 after the first eight minutes.
With playoff jitters fading, the support of a very loud student section and the community at large gave the Lady Bulldogs a huge boost heading into the second quarter. But a little bit of foul trouble started to affect the Lady Indians as Jersey Shore took advantage for a 22-21 lead at halftime.
Some great defensive efforts and positive shooting gave the Lady Bulldogs a 34-28 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Foul trouble once again got in the way for Shamokin as Jersey Shore pulled away.
Averie Hess, Olivia Edler, and Hannah Kauffman each had a team-high 11 points for Shore
Shamokin’s Kiara Bonshock led all players in the game with 15 points, but they weren’t enough to advance to the semifinals.
“I’m just very proud of my girls,” said Bischof. “It was an amazing game by both teams. We came out and battled the whole time and our hustle was unbelievable tonight.”
