Local roundup: Central Mountain softball tops Williamsport

After falling behind 2-1 in the fourth inning, Central Mountain scored the next seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings as it defeated Williams­port, 8-2, Monday in high school softball. Cassidy Brush got the win for Central Mountain while Bailee Renninger and Morgan Wetzel had two hits apiece. Jessica Brooks and Sammi Reeder had two hits each for Wil­liamsport.

Warrior Run jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead and never looked back as it defeated Hughesville, 10-0 in five innings. Megan Herriman picked up the win with a four-hit shutout and Gina Beyer added three hits. Shayna Ragan led Hughesville with two hits.

Hannah Bryson threw the final four innings while striking out six and she added two hits, a home run, two RBIs and two runs as Montgomery de­feated Midd-West, 10-6.

Alyssa Yungwirth threw a complete game five-hitter while striking out 13 and giving up one unearned run as Wellsboro defeated North­east Brad­ford, 3-1. Yungwirth also had two hits and a run while Cathryn Brought had two RBIs.

Loyalsock opened the season with an 11-0 loss at Minersville, allowing five runs in both the second and fourth innings.

• In high school baseball, St. John Neumann held a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning but St. Joe’s scored the game’s final five runs as the Knights dropped its season opener, 7-6. Daimeer Clark led Neumann with two hits while Brady Romano had two RBIs but the Knights had five errors in the loss.

Carl Dinger picked up the win and had two hits to lead North Penn-Mansfield to a 5-3 win over Cowan­esque Valley. Derrick Herbst added two RBI’s as NP-M fell behind 3-2 early but it scored the final three runs to take the win.

Noah Showers went 2 for 3 and Gage Anzulavich allowed just four hits, but Central Columbia scored six third-inning runs and dfeated Warrior Run, 6-1.

Jersey Shore pitcher Timmy Saar threw his second straight gem, but the Bulldogs were held to two hits in a 1-0 loss at Shik­ellamy. Saar has allowed just one run and six hits in 11 innings this season.

Wellsboro won its season opener, 6-1, at North­east Bradford as the Green Hornets made their first appearance of the spring on a field, for a game or practice. Carson Davis went 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Dakotah Snyder took a shutout into the seventh inning and Sam Rosevear earned a save in the seventh inning as Lewisburg defeated Mifflinburg, 5-3 and won its first game. Snyder threw 6 2/3 strong innings and struck out four. Kevin Reyes and Jack Marrara both had two hits for the Dragons.

• In boys tennis, the duo of Cody Greenaway and Brent Artley moved to 4-0 at No. 2 doubles as the two led Milton to a 4-1 win over Shikellamy. Green­away and Artley won 6-2, 6-1 and at No. 1 singles, Andy Mc­Neal picked up the 6-0, 6-1 win.

Drew King picked up a super set win at No. 3 singles and Piero Vernengo and Greg Zaccone picked up another super set win at No. 2 doubles as Lew­isburg earned a hard-fought 5-0 win over Mifflinburg.

Matt Shurbach picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to lead Central Mountain to a 5-0 win over Jersey Shore.

Williamsport swept the doubles matches and Lukas Radulski amd Ty Jackson won at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, as Williamsport defeated Selinsgrove, 4-1.

Jonathan Nelson won at No. 1 singles and Zach Fetzer won at No. 2 singles and the duo teamed up for a win at No. 1 singles to lead North Penn-Liberty to a 4-3 win over Cowanesque Valley.

Casey Haas picked up a three-set win at No. 1 singles but it wasn’t enough as Montoursville fell to Central Columbia, 4-1.

• In college baseball, Lock Haven used Evan McFarland’s bat in game one and Avery Eddy tossed a one-hitter in game two, as the Bald Eagles swept Kutztown for the second consecutive day. The Bald Eagles won game one today, 4-3 and took game two 4-0 behind Eddy’s one-hitter. In game one, Lock Haven trailed 3-1 in the fifth inning but the Bald Eagles scored the game’s final three runs, all coming in the top of the sixth. In game two, Eddy, a Hughesville graduate, pitched the complete game shutout and allowed just one hit while striking out six with no walks.

Earlier in the day, LHU’s Evan McFarland was named PSAC East Division Player of the Week as the Bald Eagles’ catcher hit .750 in three starts, including going 5 for 6 of a Kutztown sweep Sunday.

Tanner Klein fired a complete game shutout with just five hits allowed as the Mansfield bats came alive in a 13-0 game two win over No. 12 Millers­ville. The Moun­taineers dropped game one 12-5 to defending national runner-up Millersville. In game two, Mansfield ex­ploded with seven runs in the bottom of the second inning to jump out to an 8-0 lead. Mansfield had three home runs in the game two win while Klein struck out four in the win.

• In college golf, Alec Sabatino once again led the Lycoming with an 88 at the Lebanon Valley College Invitational at the par-72, 6,562-yard Lebanon Coun­try Club, as the team improved by 21 strokes over its first round of the spring season. Sabatino led the way for the fourth straight tournament, as he finished in a tie for 38th place in the field of 61 golfers. The team fired a 366.
