ROUNDUP: Lycoming softball sweeps twinbill from Colonels

In college softball, Kayla Kline had five hits and Lycoming completed come-from-behind wins in both ends of a doubleheader at Wilkes University, winning the first 3-2 in eight innings and the second, 4-3, running the team’s winning streak to seven games.

Kline finished the doubleheader 5 for 8 with a homer, a double and two RBIs, as she extended her school-record hitting streak to 20 games. In the first game, Kline tied it at two with a seventh-inning home run before Lycoming completed the comeback win in the eighth, posting a 3-2 win.

Central Mountain graduate Rachael Shady continued her torrid pitching, allowing just three hits and an earned run in her fourth consecutive win. She struck out four and walked two in the eight-inning complete game.

In the second game, Lycoming scored single runs in the third and fifth to overcome a one-run deficit in a 4-3 win before Montoursville graduate Cayla Treaster posted her first career save.

• Mansfield dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker in nine innings, but rallied to take Game 2, 5-4, and split a PSAC Central doubleheader against Lock Haven in college softball.

In the opener, Mansfield got a run on the board in the second inning in what proved to be a fast-paced pitchers’ duel between Arianna Young and Bekah Slattery. Rachel Sterner led off the bottom of the second with a double and moved to third on a bunt single. Kayla Hahn drove in Sterner to put the Mounties ahead 1-0. Both pitchers kept opposing batters at bay with Mansfield recording the only hit over the next three innings.

In the top of the sixth, Lock Haven got a runner aboard with an error before a Morgan Garlock single tied the game at 1-1. Mansfield set up a walk-off opportunity in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and bases loaded, but Slatterly ended the threat and forced extra innings. Madison Mathes drove in the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth.

• In college baseball, Mansfield dropped both ends of a PSAC East doubleheader at Bloomsburg as the Huskies used a big fifth inning to roll to a 15-3 win in the opener before walking off in Game 2, 8-6.

Bloomsburg jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first four innings before Colby Schearer put the Mountaineers on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the third. Tanner Klein cut the Husky lead to 5-3 with an RBI single into left field. Bloomsburg responded by hanging 10 runs in the bottom of the inning to take an insurmountable lead.

In Game 2, Ryan Paige had two home runs for Mansfield but a two-run homer from Cole Swiger allowed Bloomsburg to walkoff.

• Ned Baumbach shot a 75 and Tyler Marks added a 76 as Penn College defeated Lycoming, 320-377, in a college golf dual meet at the Williamsport Country Club. Junior Hailey Fricke led Lycoming with a round of 88.

Penn College had the top five scores, with Ben Fails taking third with an 82, and Matt Ciccone and Austin Moscariello tying for fourth with an 87.

Lycoming sophomore Alec Sabatino shot an 89, senior Cale Rice a 99 and senior Conor Chopey a 101 to round out Lycoming’s scoring four.
