Girls track notebook: Wellsboro’s Hosey finishes fourth in girls triple jump

SHIPPENSBURG — After she got up from the sand pit and brushed herself off, Wellsboro’s Dahlia Hosey stood just off to the side and looked over at her brother, Dupree, and her coach. After the official measurement was read off at 36 feet, 7 3/4 inches, her coach yelled to her that he wanted one more inch on her final leap.

Dahlia got off a great run and as soon as she hit the board, had a solid jump fairly deep into the pit.

That’s when the official read off the measurement: 36 feet, 9 inches.

It was just over an inch that her coach wanted, and it resulted in a spot on the podium. Hosey’s leap of 36-9 gave her a fourth-place finish in the Class AA girls triple jump at Seth Grove Stadium at Shippensburg University.

Athens’ Breana Gambrell won the event with a jump of 38 feet, 8 3/4 inches.

“I did not expect (to PR), so it’s definitely exciting,” Hosey said. “I was really happy. So making finals is just like extra nice.”

Hosey hit a PR on her final jumps early before she got to the finals. She then hit 36-9 to set a new PR.

“I think I did pretty good. My last jump was not on the board, but I still did my best jump on my last jump,” Hosey said. “It was pretty great.”

Hosey admitted as well that having her coach and brother in the stands helping her is something that was beneficial when she got to the finals.

“It really helps to have him there. If he wasn’t there, I would probably like scratch or not be in the finals because I don’t pay attention to my board like where it’s at.”

DEJA VU

Last week at the District 4 Track and Field Championships, Lewisburg’s 3,200 relay team had a lead in the final leg of the relay in the Class AA event before Mifflinburg’s Jillian Miller slowly closed in on Olivia Martin and passed her to win the event, giving Lewisburg a silver medal.

At Shippensburg University, it was a similar ending.

As Martin held a brief lead in the final 100 or so meters, it was Miller again who closed in and passed Martin with roughly 40 yards or so to run to give the Wildcats a second-place finish and Lewisburg finished in third.

“It was hard. I went out pretty fast, I think a little too fast. Just with crowd and I wasn’t really with anybody, so I didn’t really have a gauge of how fast I was going out,” Martin said. “I think it really got me in last 100 meters, I started to tighten up a bit.”

Having run against Mifflinburg previously, Martin knew that Miller has the ability to burst late in a relay race.

“I mean she always has something left at the end, so it didnt really surprise me,” Martin said.

The Lewisburg 3,200 relay team finished in a time of 9:31.57 as Mifflinburg edged the Green Dragons with a time of 9:30.46. Central Cambria won with a time of 9:25.52.

In the 1,600 relay, the Green Dragons — the same foursome of Emma Bailey, Selena Permyashkin, Sarah Reif, and Martin — placed eighth with a time of 4:08.04. Neumann Goretti won the race in 3:53.51.

Regardless of the finishes, Lewisburg left Shippensburg with two medals from the state meet.

“We knew there were some really good teams in there, so yesterday was like the big race in 4 by 4 getting to finals and today was kind of have fun with it.”

FRESHMAN SUCCESS

After becoming just the second Milton freshman this century to qualify for the state meet in an individual event, Milton’s Leah Bergey capped off her first track season by standing on the podium at Shippensburg.

Bergey ran a 15.46 in the 100 hurdles Class AA finals to take sixth place as the lone freshman in the event. Brentworth’s Brenna Cavanaugh won with a time of 14.44.

“Well the whole day was so nerve-wrecking, but I just got to focus on running your race and not really watch people around you and do your best,” Bergey said.

The Milton freshman also said her time of 15.46 was a new PR.

Bergey took third in her 100 hurdles heat to qualify for the finals, something she said was her goal to at least get to the finals and see what happens. Montoursville’s Caroline King finished sixth in her heat of the hurdles and didn’t advance to the finals.

“That was my goal to at least make it to the finals,” Bergey said. “I hope to be back next year and hopefully medal higher.”

A LATE ADDITION

With a third-place finish at the District 4 meet in the 800, Hughesville’s Autumn Avery knew she wasn’t heading to the state meet in Shippensburg. But a scratch in the event allowed Avery to get a spot at the state meet.

And Avery took advantage. The Hughesville senior placed eighth in the 800 with a time of 2:19.88. Delco Christian’s Maggie Linton won with a time of 2:12.84.

HOW DID THE OTHER LOCALS FARE?

A few local girls competed on Saturday, but didn’t get to the medal stand. Loyalsock’s Isabel Sager didn’t medal in the Class AA 3,200 race, finishing in 11th place with a time of 11:12.96. Pine Grove’s Christina Difalco won in 10:47.61. Loyalsock’s Charlotte Neylon didn’t get out of the semifinals in either the 100 or 200, as she ran a 12.95 in the 100 in her semifinal heat.

In Class AAA, the only local girl to compete was Jersey Shore’s Hannah Kauffman, who competed in the long jump. Kauffman had a distance of 15 feet, 6 1/2 inches as she took 24th place in the field. Pocono Mountain East’s Khyasia Caldwell won the event with a jump of 19-7 3/4.
