Local roundup: Wellsboro baseball reaches D4 final and PIAA playoffs
Wellsboro qualified for the state tournament for the first time in program history as the Green Hornets defeated Williamson, 6-3, Thursday afternoon at Williamson in the Distrcit 4 Class AA baseball semifinals. Wellsboro now moves on to the district championship where it will play South Williamsport Tuesday at 4 at Penn State’s Medlar Field.
Wellsboro jumped out to an early 3-0 first-inning lead on an RBI double from Carson Davis followed by a two-run single by Johnny Rowland. Wellsboro added another run in the third on a wild pitch before Williamson countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Wellsboro added two more runs in the top of the sixth an an RBI single from Cam Tennis and on an error to make it 6-2.
Rowland earned the win for Wellsboro, striking out five in five innings and not giving up an earned run. Billy Lechler pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save.
• In women’s track and field, it was an All-American, and a record-setting, performance for Bloomsburg senior and Montoursville graduate Kaylee Caruso in the final event of her brilliant four-year career.
Competing in the long jump at the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Caruso posted a jump of 6.32 meters in her first attempt of the day to give her a third-place finish overall and not only set a personal best, but also break her own school record of 6.25 meters.
Sophomore Kirsten O’Malley, another Montoursville graduate, who also participated in the long jump afternoon, finished in 20th place with a jump of 5.29 meters.
• In men’s track and field, Addison Monroe of Lock Haven University earned Second Team All-American honors after finishing 11th (30:10.08) in the 10,000-meter run.
