Cutters lose 5th in a row
Auburn’s Jeyner Baez hit a walk-off double into left field to drive in Joshual Ramirez and give the Auburn Doubledays a 7-6 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters in 11 innings.
With the loss, the Crosscutters fall to 1-5, and have lost five consecutive games. Williamsport is at Auburn today for a 2:05 p.m. game and closes out the series on Monday night.
The Crosscutters are back in Williamsport on Wednesday for a three-game stand with Batavia.
Ramirez reached on an error by Williamsport’s first baseman before Baez hit a double to win it.
Williamsport took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning and led 2-1 after three innings.
Auburn (2-4) used a three-run fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead over Crosscutters.
Williamsport’s Jonathan Guman hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to left field, bringing in Cole Stobbe to give Williamsport a 5-4 lead, but the Doubledays’ Omar Meregildo hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to right to tie up the game at 5-all.
Jesus Alastre had a huge day for Williamsport at the plate, going 3 for 4 while Raul Rivas was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Luis Encarnacion also had a home run for Williamsport in the loss.
The Doubledays and Crosscutters both had 11 hits each.
After Auburn tied the game in the sixth inning, the Doubledays responded with a run in the seventh inning. Oliver Ortiz hit a solo home run into right field for a 6-5 lead.
Williamsport tied the game though again in the eighth inning. The Crosscutters didn’t waste much time as Encranacion homered in the first at bat for Williamsport, driving a ball to left center field.
Auburn was led by three players who all had multiple hits. Ortiz (2 for 4), Omar Meregildo (2 for 4, double, home run) and Conner Simonetti (2 for 5, run) led the Doubledays offensively.
Auburn had a total of three doubles and two home runs in the win.
Williamsport committed five errors in the loss.
On the mound, Tyler Frohwirth earned the loss. Auburn’s Jake Barnett got his first win of the year for his three innings of work, scattering three Cutter hits.
