Local roundup: South major baseball advances

In the District 12 major baseball tournament, South Williamsport fended off elimination by using a strong six-run first inning to defeat Woolrich, 11-1 in four innings on Wednesday afternoon.

South Williamsport scored six runs in the first inning to take an early 6-0 lead before going ahead 10-0 after two innings.

Kaden Shay got the win on the mound for South Williamsport, striking out five as Woolrich collected just three hits.

Shay, Tadd Lusk and Alex Neidig all went 2 for 3 for South Williamsport in the win.

Woolrich was led by James Haines, who had the only extra-base hit for the team with a double.

South Williamsport advances in the losers’ bracket and will play against Jersey Shore today at East Lycoming at 6 p.m.

Montgomery used five hits and two walks to score four runs in the first inning to get things started en route to a 13-5 victory against Hepburn Lycoming.

With the loss, Hepburn Lycoming is eliminated from the tournament and Montgomery advances to face East Lycoming today at Old Lycoming at 6 p.m.

Montgomery’s Austin Kuhn threw a complete game, striking out five and issuing a walk.

Mojo Weikle went 4 for 4 for Montgomery, Austin Kuhn was 3 for 4 with a double and home run and Lucas Dietrich was 3 for 3 with two doubles.

Montgomery’s Hunter Jackson also had two doubles. Hepburn Lycoming was led by Cole Patterson, who went 3 for 3.

Williamsport Area defeated Montgomery, 12-2 in four innings. Montgomery was held to just one hit. Davion Hill and George Whaley both had two hits and Caleb Fausnaught hit a three-run home run.

• In the 8-10 softball tournament, East Lycoming defeated South-Blue in a close game, 14-13, to advance to the next round in the elimination bracket.

Jersey Shore also defeated Newberry in a rout, 20-2, to advance to play Clinton today at Old Lycoming at 6 p.m.

Williamsport plays East Lycoming at Newberry today as well at 6 p.m.
