Cutters lose on road, one cancelled

Dylan Burdeaux’s walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Connecticut a 2-1 win over Williamsport on Thursday in what was supposed to the front end of a doubleheader. Rain caused the cancellation of the second game and only one of the scheduled three games in the series ended up being played.

Connecticut and Williamsport were tied 1-1 heading into extra innings when Luke Burch reached on an infield single with one out in the eighth inning. He went to second on a walk and third on a wild pitch. That’s when Burdeaux singled off Crosscutters pitcher Andrew Brown to end the game.

Williamsport had just one hit and was shutout over the final seven innings after scoring a run in the first off Tigers top prospect Matt Manning. Jake Scheiner had Williamsport’s lone hit, and Adam Haseley drove in their lone run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning Wednesday.

Williamsport starter Julian Garcia didn’t return to the game after the first three innings were played Wednesday before rain suspended the game. Garcia struck out six in his three shutout innings, lowering his ERA to 1.29.

Brown picked up his second loss of the season, pitching 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing three hits and one earned run. He struck out three.
